In my opinion this is one of the best books ever written about second world war. I have to say that i've read this book over twenty times, and i've got over three hundred books of second world war. If you are an enthusiast you must read this one. The most brilliant tactician.

Many a student of WWII will have wondered when a decent biography of this much-overlooked Field Marshal would appear. His long service on the Eastern Front and lack of personal papers perhaps explain this. No matter; Steven Newton's book is well worth the wait. This is a truly superb book.

I was initially a little sceptical given the dearth of material from his personal papers (he destroyed them before committing suicide). This is a handicap, in that there is next to nothing about Model the man, his personal life and his inner thoughts. What there is hints at a shallow, tormented soul, drowning his fears and what few contradictions he may have felt in increasing amounts of alcohol.

At the Winchester Festival, reviewing his book, Hastings made a misguided and alarming remark, "that the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, other than Taranto Raid, played no significant part in WW2". It is therefore no wonder that he has omitted to include in his book the British Pacific Forces's successful attack on the Japanese oil refineries at Palembang (Java) in January 1945. Four British fleet carriers with 244 aircraft embarked disabled the refineries that were supplying Japan precious aviation fuel. Glancing through the book Hastings does not do justice to the Royal Navy in the Far East during 1944-45 period, until he educates himselve on the Fleet Air Arm's war effort, I will stay clear of his books. Certainly a very interesting book with information directly from the lips of the great German generals of WWII. This information is available only in this book, and for that reason alone, it is clearly worth the price. However, the work is rather marred by the incessant use of this vessel by Liddell Hart to, for all intents and purposes, point his nose at the world and say, "I told you so." And whilst that may have some merit, it becomes rather annoying to see him inflate his ego by statements about his own infallibility.

An adsorbing and fascinating account of a true war hero and his life as a campaigning soldier. This edition is spoilt however by having been rewritten for the American market and therefore loses some of it's meaning from the original and in places can read like an American war film and all that that encompasses.
It's particularly disappointing that at the end of the book, on page 424, there is a table of Wehrmacht and SS rank comparisons against US ranks but a list of British ranks is not given.
Overall try to buy the 1994 English edition if you can, but this edition is certainly well worth reading if the English edition cannot be found.

In terms of design, editing, typesetting and proofreading, this is the worst book I've red in the last 20 years or so. 5 stars for author's content, 1 for publisher's mess of a job.

Let me elaborate.

The German original of this book has the title "Der Januskopf: Feldmarschall von Manstein: eine Neubewertung" ("The Janushead: Field Marshal von Manshtein: A Reappraisal") and a Roman coin with double-faced Janus on its cover. Clear and simple: Janus implies duplicity, so probably not everything was OK with the "best strategic mind" of the Wehrmacht. Hence 'reappraisal.' What was wrong with that? Apparently, everything.

On page iv, you can find that the English edition "is not a verbatim translation of the German original": something has been ... Read More:

as owner of over 2oo books on the waffen ss and eastern front i can honestly say this is one of the top three i own. i found the book to be always gripping and interesting with a story of action,honesty and comradeship. this is overall a very good read and would make an excellent addition to any collector of ww11 books

The first time I read this book I coudlnt put it down (Apart from two incidents described that made me feel sick and forced me to close it). I have just finished reading it for the second time and although I still find it a great read I couldnt help feel parts of it were poorly written. Perhaps this is beacuse this isn't the full version translated from the german original or its just down to the skill of the author. In parts it reads like extremely grim fiction (almost cliche) rather than a first hand account of the front line and gives the feeling that the author has taken a few liberties here and there.
