. Penin Guide to Spanish Wine
by: Jose Penin
January 31, 2008
The guide is very much standard in terms of layout - begins with notes about the tasting and rating processes, gives an overview of Spanish wines, and then delves into the various regions giving an overview of each, together with listings of most estates and their wines. The book ends with a nice list of top wines, and an index that seems to work well.
However, on page 9, the author states that with each rating he also gives the price range of the wine, as well as a rating of the value for money (1 to 5 stars). Umm, nice... but where is this information? It seems to me that the publishers of this English-language edition simply removed this information for what can only be commercial reasons and protection of import monopolies in ... Read More:

. Wine Report 2008
by: Tom Stevenson
September 27, 2007
I think HIgham and Merritt are badly misguided, but not by the Wine Report. One of them is not interested in anything that doesn't tell him where the next and nearest discounted sale of plonk is going on, the other one is too famous and knowledgable. I always like it when people introduce themselves with " I am an authority on" it;s usually because nobody has ever heard of them. What do you know about Luxembourg wines , Mr. Merritt?
Stating the bleeding obvious about well thumped regions like Bordeaux does not prove a point, that's not where the guide is at ist strongest. Ever heard of aby Duhr? Daahh. This book never pretended to be the guide for Beavis and Buthead, and that is why it's so excellent!Wine Report 2008

. The Wines of Burgundy
by: C Coates
April 02, 2008
Contrary to what the two other reviewers of this book have stated,to me one of the strengths of the book is the tasting notes.
The majority of wine enthusiasts are going to seek out older wines to drink as they appreciate that most good burgundy needs plenty of bottle age before it is at its best.
The book is very well written and represents good value at the price.----------lets face it, you would struggle to buy a half decent bottle of burgundy for the price of this book!!!

. Vino Italiano: Regional Wines of Italy
by: Joseph Bastianich, David Lynch
September 30, 2005
Great wine guide. It's very similar to Hugh Johnson's pocket guide but with much greater detail.
Talking of Hugh Johnson, this guide suffers from the demon proof-reader too - perhaps they've all been sampling too much vino! Unless you've got a fantastic memory, Hugh Johnson's guide is probably more useful as it can easily be carried around on wine buying trips, Wine Behind TL is really too bulky for that.
Wouldn't be without it though. It's encyclopedic knowledge will help you track down the wines that you want.

. The Oxford Companion to Wine (Oxford Companions)
from: OUP Oxford
September 21, 2006
. Thirty years ago this book could not have been written. With the increasing ascendancy of the New World wine makers and in particular the influence of the Davis campus of the University of California, viticulture and oenology are now rigorous, scientific and commercially oriented professions. This is reflected in the "Oxford Companion to Wine" which has to be the most comprehensive, authoritative and accessible resource dealing with all aspects of the world of wine. Jancis Robinson who edited this encyclopedia of wine is a highly respected wine writer and educator. She is also very well credentialled, holding the prestigious title of "Master of Wine". The real power of this book as an information source is the very effective ... Read More:
