Nice book, I agree. But it annoyed me that the map showing the location of the featured places had roads but no railway stations were shown. Shouldn't a book like this be getting us out of our cars? Travelling by train is much more relaxing.

This Alastair Sawday book is absolutely fabulous. Mya husband and I never use anyone other than 'Sawdays'. You will never be disappointed and the accommodation you will never fault. It really is a super book and well worth a buy.

Special places to stay - a bold statement, delivered in spades by the latest in the consistently excellent Sawday guides. 170 plus places - B&Bs, hotels, inns, some self-catering - each independently inspected by the Sawday team and special in some way.

I like this book. It oozes quality. As well as the collection of hugely tempting places to stay, it offers suggestions for local walks and days out with the kids, restaurants, pubs, and cream teas (of course). It helpfully lists places with good wheelchair and wifi access. It also notes those within 2 miles of the National Cycle Network - the ideal book for pocket, glovebox or saddlebag.

Thanks to Alistair Sawday I have much more room on the bookshelf; the AA, RAC, Michelin and Johansens books won't be needed again so they have all taken a long holiday to the charity bookshop!

Sawday's British Hotels & Inns is much more then a book; it is a guide that will change your attitude towards `going away' forever. In the past trying to find a nice place to stay was always the job of my wife who would spend hours researching places, but now there is a sprint to the bookshelf to find this book whenever we decide to go anywhere.

Once I've found somewhere I like the feel of I don't even bother doing any additional research...what's the point, the guys at Alistair Sawday have done it all for you. When you initially read this book ... Read More:

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. I often turn to the Alastair Sawday website for help when looking for a place to stay. But there is nothing better than the guide. The maps give you a clear idea where the B&B's are, and you can then flip through the relevant entries to find one that suits you. And you can be sure that any one of them will be something out of the ordinary and worth the visit. I don't use anything else.

As with all the 'Special Places' guides, this is full of charming and interesting places to stay. It's worth planning your trip around the entries, which is what we did recently when travelling the length of Spain with our dogs (the book tells you if places cater for dogs, vegetarians, children etc). It's so beautifully produced that you'll enjoy reading it even if you're not leaving home.
