Took this one with me to Venice. Did'nt really impress me. Would recommend getting a Lonelyplanet guide instead.

But no real problems. Just like the lonelyplanet layout better.

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see ... Read More:

This guide to New York is without question one of the best out there. In true Timeout style, there is no sugarcoating or waffling in sight. What you get from this is a guide that finds out what is the best of the best and doesn't bother with the information you don't need. The book itself is divided into the different New York neighbour hoods with comprehensive and up to date info on each. What is also interesting is the amount of information you get on the more social aspect of the city. When people think of New York you think, Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, which are great, but to capture the true essence of the city you need to dig a little deeper and this is what the people at timeout are trying to do in the guide. The entry for Cannes is very disappointing in terms of restaurants. The food and the service in la Liberia is at best indifferent and it is definitely not worth a visit; for an excellent (if slightly pricey Italian) visit the exceptionally busy Vesuvio on La Croisette, near the Martinez. Unaccountably, no mention is made of Gastoun Gastounette, one of the best restaurants in the town, despite the fact that it is virtually next door to the La Pizza, which is mentioned, in quai St-Pierre. The entry for Le 72 Croisette is grossly exaggerated: there is no need to battle through any hordes - it is at least half empty most of the time and you would find it difficult to see anyone going into the Martinez as you would need X-ray vision to see through several ... We used this book last October when visiting Milan. We have also been to Verona in the past and this book is informative on both cities. Did not make it as far as the lakes so cannot speak about previous reviews. But fine on the cities.

I'm quite a fan of the Time Out series when it comes to city guides. This guide to Rome was very good, we tried out some of the recommended restaruants and also found our hotel through this book, which was an excellent choice. The biggest complaint would probably be the maps.Sometimes it seemed to be a bit tricky to find what you were looking for.Also on a few occassions it appeared that eating places were not where the guide book said they would be or they were closed when the guide said they would be open for business.
