. Italy for the Gourmet Traveller
by: Fred Plotkin
May 25, 2006
This book is just simply that: readable and reliable. It's a good read with all sorts of quirky facts thrown in, but the restaurant guide is simply the business. We suspected as much from reviews and recommendations by "Fred" (as we've come to call him) of restaurants we knew from previous stays in Italy, but we used this guide for a recent short break in Umbria and it was right on the money for lunch and dinner, good food, and good restaurants. It's worth its weight in gold (and that's a lot of gold!).

. Italy (Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay)
by: Alastair Sawday
March 06, 2008
Since I was introduced to Alastair Sawday's books & website about 2 years ago I have never looked back. As per previous publications 'Italy' did not fail to live up to its title of 'Special Places'. I have spent a number of evenings traveling, in my mind, through the wonderful countryside, city & coast of Italy with Sawdays as my guide.
Sawday's is just wonderful as it gives you a very informed idea of each place and depending on what you are looking for there is always something to please. As always the book is perfectly laid out and very easy to use - it was also great to see the green emphasis of the book. I have recommended Sawday's to family & friends and will continue to do so.
Italy was always on ... Read More:

. Tasting Tuscany: Exploring and Eating Off the Beaten Track
by: Beth Elon
June 05, 2006
I love this book. It's an unusual mixture, a hard book to categorise, but that's its stength. For many who come to Tuscany it's the perfect mixture as the great food and beautiful scenery combined are such a part of the pleasure. Beth Elon suggests driving routes with places to see along the way, then explains the food specialities of each area, lists special places to eat, then gives a few sample recipes from each restaurant. One of the real strengths is the local specialities information, as it really highlights some of traditions and how food can be unique to a particular small location not just 'Tuscany' as a larger region. We have found the restaurants that we've tried from the book to be just as described, with excellent, good value food and ... Read More:

. Italian Wines
by: Gambero Rosso
January 15, 2008
..instead of having to pay through the nose for a copy in a Sienese bookshop. As ever, LP guides have the feeling of being written by someone who's actually been there, and the advice on San Gimignano (get there early or go in Winter) would have been worth it alone.
This is an excellent guide, especially if - like us - you were roaming over both regions during your holiday. Highly recommended

. Travels with Herodotus
by: Ryszard Kapuscinski
May 01, 2008
This book is a very informative, enlightening and interesting read.
This book is a pleasure to read. It is easy to follow the author as he travels around the world. He starts explaining briefly about his background in Poland and his desire to `cross the border' and how, as a consequence, he finds himself being sent to India.
Perhaps one of the main attractive qualities of the author is that he is honest; he doesn't say he likes or even enjoys all of the places he travels to. For example, taking his first long-haul trip to India, the reader gets the impression that he really entered at the deep end and found it quite tough.
Later in the book he goes on to discuss in more detail the reasons why people travel ... Read More:
