.It's a Boy: Women Writers on Raising Sons from: Seal Press October 21, 2005 I found this book to have a very negative and complaining tone to it. It was not what I expected. Rather than celebrate having a son it seemed to find writers that wanted a girl and ended up with a boy, or their boy was a bully or some other negative story. .The Pocket Daring Book for Girls: Things to Do by: Andrea J. Buchanan, Miriam Peskowitz May 06, 2008 I checked out the large book from the library and gave it to my grandaughter to see how she liked it. She did! But it's a huge book and it's filled with alot of history. I decided to invest in this pocket version, which is the majority of hands on activities from the book. It's quite nice. Two disappointments were that it does not include the Sun Saluation poses or the Karate poses that my grandaughter enjoyed trying. Maybe I can find those online and include them as inserts. .Mother Shock: Loving Every (Other) Minute of It by: Andrea J. Buchanan 2003-04 This is the book you'll want to buy for all of your friends who are new moms. The books is entertaining and a breath of fresh air. It allows one to see that all moms are human and all of the emotions that go along with motherhood are normal. .It's a Girl: Women Writers on Raising Daughters from: Seal Press March 10, 2006 I found this book, along with it's brother title, to be tirelessly repetitive and over simplified. Most of these women (the great majority of whom are upper middle class New Yorkers) have very similar stories to tell, albeit in slightly different ways and with a few truly unique perspectives and experiences. Whether reporting on mothering girls or boys: expectations based on very old gender stereotypes that are reinforced by the old, inevitable nature argument. I was saddened that the majority of these accounts were not more imaginative or complex. .Literary Mama: Reading for the Maternally Inclined from: Seal Press December 06, 2005 A book even designed with busy mom's in mind. I was able to read brief snatches in between snack time and dragon hunts. The images and language are with me even after the book is finished. This is a collection of writers talented enough to do motherhood justice. It goes beyond the sentimental fluff flooding the mother market. Read it not only for the insight it provides on parenting but also as an example of great writing. It is a perfect mix of poetry, fiction and essays.
