. Getting to Know ArcObjects (With CD-ROM)
by: Robert Burke, Andrew Arana
October 01, 2003
This book is a great overview of not only ArcObjects but component programming as well. The text is to the point. The tutorial examples are short and put together well to illustrate the topic. The amount of material and exercises for each topic are just right. The writing style is very approachable. I really enjoyed going through the book and tutorials.
This book may not be for someone who does not know Visual Basic very well. I would not consider this an intro to VB or programming. It is as the title says - getting to know ArcObjects. Examples revolve around customization of ArcMap and ArcCatalog. Does not cover ArcGIS server or ArcGIS Engine.

. Lonely Planet China
by: Damian Harper, Andrew Burke, Julie Grundvig
2007-05
I used this book only in Beijing and Shanghai, so I can only vouch for those two sections. The maps of Beijing were great, when they were there. Because the book appears not to have been copy edited, there are lots of references to more detailed maps there are not actually in the book.
Also, the Beijing section doesn't include some of the most interesting areas for tourists to visit. It seems like someone just did a google search on Beijing and listed the first few things that come up, regardless of their interest or relevance to tourists. A major park walking distance to the forbidden city surrounded by cafes, museums and excellent souvenir shops is simply not listed.
Shanghai was a little better.

. Laos (Country Guide)
by: Andrew Burke
August 01, 2007
What a difference a new edition makes. Lonely Planet's brand new guidebook, Laos 6th edition, released August 2007, is easily the best on the market. The traveller looking for comprehensive coverage in a guidebook need look no further. An extra 60 pages long, this title packs an impressive punch, with a good balance of exhaustive coverage of the key destinations along with sound information on the lesser known spots.
Quite simply, Australian co-authors Andrew Burke and Justine Vaisutis have put together what is the best English-language offline resource for travel in Laos. From a tourism perspective, Laos is a rapidly developing nation, especially in the major tourist centres where new accommodation options multiply at a seemingly ever ... Read More:

. Playland (Images of America: New York)
by: Kathryn W. Burke, Foreword by Andrew J. Spano
May 19, 2008
This is a wonderful historical overview of Rye Playland. The book captures the flavor of Playland completely. The text gives due credit to Frank Darling, Fred Church, and others for the park creation. The many photos illustrate the rides, shows, and attractions past and present be it the tumblebug, old mill, Laff in the dark, Airplane and Dragon coasters, racing derby, merry go round, fun house, kiddyland, skee ball, promotional events, picnics, water activities, etc. Even park construction photos and photos of Rye Beach Park that preceded Playland are included. To every visitor of Playland, this book will surely revive grand old memories or expose them to the magic of its past days.

. Lonely Planet West Africa
by: Mary Fitzpatrick, Andrew Burke, Greg Campbell, Bethune Carmichael, Matt Fletcher, Frances Linzee Gordon, Anthony Ham, Amy Karafin, Kim Wildman, Isabelle Young
2002-10
This is an adequate guide, but was disappointing in a few areas. Firstly, it is not geared to someone making a comprehensive West Africa trip but rather reads like a collection of individual country guides. It's OK if you are going to just fly in a hang out in a single country, but planning cross border itineraries is a chore. There could be better integration for the area.
Secondly, using the maps and references to them is a bit taxing. Place names that would likely be obsure to the reader are presented in the text without specifying country or area; the only way to figure out where or how is to scan maps randomly for some idea of specifically where they are talking about. Place names are often referred to with different spellings, ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet South Africa, Lesotho & Swaziland (Lonely Planet South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland)
by: Simon Richmond, Alan Murphy, Kim Wildman, Andrew Burke
2001-12
I used the 3rd edition of this guide on my first trip to South Africa in 1999. Back then, this guide would recommend places to stay in the most dangerous streets of Jo'burg, and guarantee the readers that the area was even safe to walk around at night. A taxi driver in Jo'burg told us he was appalled at their reccommendations on where to stay and where to go out, saying they were simply too dangerous, especially for white backpackers. The guide also had an aggressive attitude towards any predominantly white bars or clubs dismissing them as "artificial"... as if the only option was to go out in Shebeens. Racial issues apart, they seem to be reversing this trend, and have been doing constant progress. This edition recommends mostly well-located ... Read More:
