Three books I use and reuse for hiking: this one (I'm happy it's been updated and use it for pointing me in the right direction reference more than detailed trail directions); the Golden Gate Trailblazer for all the gorgeous trails on the San Francisco coastline and those in beautiful Marin; the Stairway Walks in San Francisco book. Someday I hope to try some of the southern California outings. This book is very thick and comprehensive.

.Moon Handbooks Yosemite (Moon Handbooks)

I used this book on a recent trip to Yosemite. It is brief telling you just what you need to know. The advice was excellent. It reminds me of Rick Steves books for Europe but not quite as good. I would recommend this book to anyone going to Yosemite. I'll be looking for other Moon Handbooks for other American destinations now.

If you only have a few days or a week to spend in Tahoe you will certainly want to make the most of your time. A good place to start is this new book by outdoor author Ann Marie Brown. In addition to stunning photos (both color and black and white--a trademark of Brown's travel guides), decent maps, and multiple itineraries for various types of vacation activities, this book povides a detailed listing of all the recreational opportunities at Tahoe. Hiking and biking receive the most attention but water sports, skiing and climbing opportunities are also covered in detail. Using this book, you will have no problem filling the days of your vacation.

My husband and I have been using this book for a few years and it's wonderful. We live in San Diego County and have done 4 of the hikes in the San Diego chapter. We had trouble finding Barker Valley Falls and Los Penasquitos Falls. We were able to find Cedar Creek Falls (in early 2008), Three Sisters Falls (in early 2007), Cottonwood Creek Falls (in late 2005), Kitchen Creek Falls (in early 2007). The area around Cedar Creek Falls was burned in the Southern California wildfires of 2007 but the waterfall was still very impressive. We drive a Toyota Prius and it was a little nerveracking driving the dirt road to the Cedar Creek Falls trail head but we made it ok.

The San Francisco Bay Area has some of the most surreal landscapes in the world stretching across mountains, plains, lakes, waterfalls, redwood forests, and the Pacific Ocean all hikers; both apprentices and experts would enjoy. The list of hiking trails covers those in the Peninsula and Marin County by the Pacific Ocean and slightly inland, the Sonoma wine County, and the East Bay. These trails are rated in terms of their difficulty; easy and moderate; which usually mean flat trails with little elevation changes, as well as strenous and "butt-kicker" which mean they have significant elevation changes with steep slopes. Overall, this is a good hiking guide; I have been on two of the hikes since receiving the book a couple weeks ago and I find that the author's descriptions are spot on.

However, in my opinion, not enough attention is paid to people who plan to hike with their dogs. Only roughly 20% of the 101 recommended hikes allow dogs (not the author's fault, I realize), but there is insufficient detail regarding the trails that do allow dogs.

First, there is no comprehensive index of dog-friendly trails in the book; so, if you want to find a hike to do with Fido, you are left to skim all the hikes in your chosen area until you find one that allows dogs. Such a list could easily be included among the helpful "Best of.." lists which have been provided for, ... Read More:

Los Angeles has a lot of neat countryside to explore if you know where to look. When I first came to the LA basin from Idaho, I was overwhelmed by the suburban sprawl, but I quickly found lots of nice outdoor experiences nearby. This book will help anyone else looking to escape the city for a few hours (or days). It features over 80 hikes all within 2 hours of LA.

I've hiked about a third of the trails described in this guide and all are nice. With time off in April, I expect to explore more. By way of a warning though, you will need to be reasonably fit to do many of these hikes. Most are 5 to 10 miles long, often with substantial elevation gain.
