. Fables Vol. 10: The Good Prince
by: Bill Willingham
June 17, 2008
Bill Willinmgham's creative use of fairy, folk, and fabulous tales has yet to fall short or disappoint in any way. The stories engage the reader and journeys him through imaginative arabesques never imagined no matter how familiar the story. This volume further strengthens FABLES' ascended avatar among the best of the trade collection pantheon. The characterization remains rich, adding to the already considerable depth of Prince Ambrose, the Bigby bad wolf cubs, Weyland Smith, and Frau Totenkinder in delightful ways. The plot, while quite complex, even byzantine, for a graphic novel, winds lovingly and at length back upon itself with grace and aplomb. Again, these are not the watery and weepy nursery tales of the Disney ilk, but it is ... Read More:

. Fables Vol. 1: Legends in Exile
by: Bill Willingham
December 01, 2002
I found this book worth checking out. The idea is that all your favorite fairy tale characters have had their homeland invaded by some evil force. All of the "fables" have had to evacuate their homelands in fear of their lives, where do they end up? Manhattan. They've even created their own community within Manhattan that they call Fabletown. This first book tells us the story of Rose Red, and her sister, Snow White. Rose Red has been murdered and Bigsby (Big Bad Wolf) is sent to investigate. Who killed Rose Red? I guess you'll have to read to find out.

. Fables Vol. 2: Animal Farm
by: Bill Willingham
August 01, 2003
I've only read two volumes of "Fables." The first volume and now this. While it can't be said that this book, "Animal Farm," was as good as the first one, Bill Willingham is an awesome writer simply for the way he switches things up. The first volume of this series was a traditional mystery, complete with a parlor scene at the end. This takes on a completely different genre, falling somewhere between adventure/thriller and war/revolution story.
Willingham also uses this book to flesh out his Fable mythology. The first book informed the reader that the Fables that couldn't pass for human lived on a sort of farm land up state, and the majority of this book takes place up there. We get to see Willingham and artist Buckingham's take on the animal ... Read More:

. Fables Vol. 6: Homelands
by: Bill Willingham
January 01, 2006
In this case, it's the world of "Fables," the place where storybook characters have (or had) real lives versus the hundred or more planets under control of The Adversary. The Fables live in exile here on Earth, blending in when they look human enough, and withdrawing to a private enclave if they don't. No matter how many hundreds of years they live among us, they still have a dream of returning to their one-time home. Five of the seven monthlies collected in this volume follow a heroic quest to make return possible - an attempt to assassinate The Adversary himself. The story takes several startling turns, and promises more action in future volumes.
The other two monthlies reproduced here each tell one-issue stories of their own. In the first, Jack (of ... Read More:

. Fables Vol. 7: Arabian Nights (and Days)
by: Bill Willingham
June 28, 2006
The fairy-tale world of this remarkable epic just expanded. By now, the reader has gotten accustomed to Snow White, Prince Charming, and all the rest as living, breathing urbanites. In this collection, they receive a diplomatic mission from Sinbad, who represents the wide world of far-eastern myth. And, true to mythic form, his evil advisor plots behind his back ...
The second story line in this book starts in the armies invading the Fables' lands, the force that drove the Fables into exile originally. There, the wooden soldiers hold high rank, not just because of their bravery and nearly indestructible making, but because of tight political loyalties as well. They treat the "meats" as lesser beings, subject to weaknesses of the flesh and of the heart. Then, one of the officers ... Read More:

. Fables Vol. 3: Storybook Love
by: Bill Willingham
May 01, 2004
After the somewhat letdown of a second volume (that's only in comparison to the stellar book one), Fables is back in full force with the best volume yet. It's also the thickest, clocking in at eight issues; that is three more than either of the previous volumes. It has two one-shots, a two issue story arc, and an entire four issue story arc. The one-shots give awesome backstory, and the longer arcs push the story forward in exciting and surprising directions.
The first one-shot gives us a glimpse into earlier days, when the Fables were still new to the New World (our "mundy" dimension). It features Jack as the main character, who fights as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War and deals--literally--with death. The story was quite a captivating read, and one of the best issues yet. ... Read More:

. Fables Vol. 5: The Mean Seasons
by: Bill Willingham
April 01, 2005
If you've been following along, you know that Snow White was due to give birth any moment. She delivers successfully, and the very special family goes home happy and healthy. Don't count on happily ever afters just yet - by this time in the series, you should know where that's ended up. It's a good time for her maternity leave, because a grasping climber has decided that Fabletown's fabled coffers are just the thing to line his pockets with. He makes extravagant promises about good things for everyone ... well, I write this during a real-world election year. You know what that means.
And, as long as you're here, this collection opens with a one-issue back story. Many of these characters have lived in our mundane world for centuries, including twentieth centiry and its real-world wars. Even if the ... Read More:
