. Blood Trail (Joe Pickett Novels)
by: C. J. Box
May 20, 2008
This is the latest in a series about Joe Pickett, game warden. Probably not the best of the series, but still worthwhile. Do wish he had spent more time on the family members as in previous books, especially concerning Joe's mother-in-law. You aren't meant to like her, but I was wondering what her current husband was going to do about her 'wandering'. Joe's daughters, Sheridan and Lucy had little space in the book as did his wife. Seemed like they were there just to support Joe. Usually they play a larger role in the role.
At any rate, the book had the usual violence and Joe gets the bad guy, even though he gets no joy from solving the crimes.

. Savage Run: A Joe Pickett Novel
by: C. J. Box
May 06, 2003
This is the second novel featuring Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett. The novel deals with contemporay issues. The villains in the novel are wealthy "ranchers" who hunt animals for trophies and demand their rights to despoil the environment (oil drilling, logging, mining, grazing cattle). They are willing to hunt people, arranging to kill anyone who opposes them.
They are opposed by environmental activists (sometimes called tree huggers) who are willing to violate the law if it suits their purposes. Both sides have an attitude that the end justifies the means.
Joe Pickett and others are caught in the middle, and things emerge about his wife's past. Readers should be forewarned that some scenes in the novel are a bit gruesome.

Am a retired California Cop living in Sandpoint. Bought book on recommendation of another retiree living here. Fast read. Interesting how the author changed names of locations, but if you live up here you know where and what they are.

. Trophy Hunt (A Joe Pickett Novel)
by: C. J. Box
April 05, 2005
This was my first Joe Pickett book. I found a lot of things to like about this book. The detailed, you-are-there veracity of the setting reminded me of the best of Tony Hillerman. I also loved the characters. Joe Pickett and his family seemed so real I felt I could reach out and touch them.
The central mystery here has to do with cattle mutilations which horrifically make their way to humans. While the subject was gruesome, C.J. Box structured the mystery in an exciting way that kept me turning the pages. I did solve the mystery before Joe did, which disappointed me a little. It's not something I try to do when I read a mystery, and I like to be surprised.
The resolution of this story was also very disappointing and felt rushed and ill ... Read More:
