Hiaasen's recent book is not more of the same. This one is NOT funny. If you are a golfer, love a golfer, or are related to a golfer, this book rings WAY too true. Bought it, read it, passed it on to my golfer son-in-law, and asked him to ignore the parts about politics and just wince at the rest of it. I've read all of Hiaasen's books and as many of his articles as I could lay hands on here in Michigan and when visiting Florida, and have always loved his stories. I would hope, for the sake of his readers, that he goes back to his stories and lets the truth- telling lie there, near the cup and the alligator.

Read the book Flush. It is a really great book! The book is by Carl Hiaasen. If someone likes boats or oceans, or both, you'll like this book. Meet the Underwood Family: Paine, Donna, Noah, and Abbey. At the beginning of the book, Noah's dad is in jail because he sunk the Coral Queen. Dusty Muleman, the owner of the boat, was dumping sewage in the ocean. The reason why Noah's dad sunk the boat is so that none of the sewage would get in the ocean. Noah and Abbey try to make up a plot to get Dusty Muleman busted for eternity for dumping sewage into the ocean, to prove their father's innocence.

Hoot is an exceptional book with a respectable message. While I was reading it I was thinking it's okay, that's interesting, hmmm, aha, oh, ect. But what I never thought was wow!, cool, haha, weird, oh no! and so on. I felt like the author lacked passion, the comedy was juvenile, and the drama unrealistic. When I was done reading I was actually a little relieved it was over! That has never happened to me before. So read the book if you are a great Hiaasen fan, or 8 and under, but otherwise set the book down; walk away with your hands raised; and forget about the whole crazy idea of reading it. Cause honestly, it just ain't too special.

This book was an entertaining distraction from real life. Throughout the book I was excited to how the characters came colliding together in a hilarious situation born out of their own ineptness. This book is a funny tribute to human nature and Florida beauty. It was a great diversion for me while I spent the weekend at the beach.

Yeah, the totally, hot chick Joey will drive you a little mad: she's fearless, she can swim like a dolphin, she looks great after hours in the sea with her make up washed off--essentially she's EVERYTHING I'M NOT! But if you can forgive her the coolness and strength, then you can laugh your way though this novel that moves so quickly you'll wish it didn't end so soon. This is a totally FUN read. And darnnit, YOU (the person reading this review) should quit being so damn serious all the time and lighten up a little. Go lounge on the hammock. Screw the dishes in the sink, or the unfolded laundry piled on the couch, or the grease stains on the garage floor that will take you hours and many toxic chemicals to remove. This is my first Hiaasen novel and won't be my last. The story moves fast and the characters are difficult to keep up with at first. Finally it clicked in for me and I was able to identify the main characters, ancillary characters and settings. Very descriptive scenery and good character development. More of an adventure although impossible in real life (mine, anyway)and I am sure the characters resemble real people living somewhere even as wacky as they were, but not in my unexciting suburban area. The humor comes from imagining the scenes as described and the predicaments each main character gets him/herself into as well as the thinking processes they exhibit. It was eating road kill that clouded the overall ambience...

Carl Hiaasen is a very talented writer. He knows how to craft stories that are delightfully over-the-top, genuinely funny and cynical to the nth degree. Tourist Season is an early Hiaasen novel about a rag-tag group of American terrorists who hope to restore Florida to its former glory by driving out all the tourists, snowbirds and retirees. To accomplish this, they go on a killing rampage which they have convinced themselves will lead to a mass exodus from the Sunshine State.
Brian Keyes, a former newspaper reporter turned private eye, and Al Garcia, a Miami police sergeant, are charged with stopping the terrorists' nefarious scheme.

.Skin Tight

There are some books you re-read or return to and Skin Tight is one of those books; it was as good as the 1st time and still holds up-- remember this was pre-Botox ( just imagine what a field day Hiaasen would've had with that). The premise is hilarious and the hitmen are inept, much like Elmore Leonard's style. Re-reading this book also brings back memories of Air Jordans, Run DMC and Robin Leach. Quirky characters, dark humor and brilliant setups. Writers like Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard inspired me to write. I'm still a fan.

My only question is: With all this great material, what happened with the movie?

This book started so well. It grabbed me right out of the gate, it made me laugh, and it kept me turning the pages. But in the end, I felt ripped off. Not a single major character changed throughout the course of the story.

When I read a book, I want to see the main character grow; or at least learn something about themselves or the world around them. 450 pages is a lot of space for an author to make that happen. But, based on where all of the primary characters in this story wound up, the book could have just as well ended after the first scene.
