. Thailand (Country Guide)

This guide is great and seems to be the guide of choice of pretty much everyone I saw during my three week stint in Thailand. I had to have seen it in at least 6 languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese), so considering that the international community seems to embrace it pretty well, I'd put some merit in its pages.
As much as I love this book, I have to admit that it isn't perfect. It puts a lot of information within its pages and sometimes misses some places (mostly restaurants and some guest houses) in the smaller towns. Also, the maps can be a little out of scale. However, with that said, the book is great. It gives a great overview of pretty much every town you can think of to go to (some more popular ones ... Read More:

. Southeast Asia: On a Shoestring
by: China Williams
March 01, 2008
This book is all good so far. Looking at different types of itineries across the whole of SE Asia is very helpful, and the prices seem pretty up to date at the mo (aug 08). Have had some good tips on getting the best for our money and the 'our picks' in each section have made the places full of like minded people! Top tip for such a thick book -when you get into a city/town/place cut out the pages with a penknife so you only have to take the relevant info & maps out and about with you. If you are travelling for a long while, the book (with remaining places you havent been to) can be passed on or thrown away.

. Bangkok (City Guide)
by: Joe Cummings, China Williams

I took this book everywhere I went. It gives you a great perspective on the things you will find, things to look out for, and a great guide on how to get to the places you want to go.
I went on business to Bangkok, and during the 3 days that I had to go around, this book helped me find those things that mattered most.
I think it is a great read for anyone who is planning to go to amazing Bangkok and it is a must when travelling around in the city. Lonely Planet books are seriously great!

. Lonely Planet Thailand
by: Joe Cummings, Morgan Konn, China Williams, Becca Blond, Matt Warren

I have lots of guidebooks - and lots of Lonely Planets, for that matter. But despite the fact that they say they are for "independent travellers", I keep finding ridiculous reviews on restaurants and hotels, to the point where I've stopped using them.
The History, Snapshot, and similar sections are great, but if you have a brain of your own - use it. Forget their restaurant and hotel recommendations, as I'm not even sure they visit the places. Sometimes they have history or comments on places that is worthwhile to read, though. All tourbooks may have these drawbacks, to be fair.
Finally, I think I'm going to stop buying Lonely Planet's, though. First, they always act like driving is so scary everywhere, when it's actually ... Read More:

. The Asia Book (General Pictorial)
by: China Williams
2007-09
In this large-sized pictorial, Lonely Planet takes you for a quick trip through each country in Asia (minus Russia). Each entry contains dazzling photographs, most featuring the people of Asia rather than scenery, and several paragraphs providing basic information about each country and/or a few fun facts.
The book is worth buying, or at least perusing, simply for the fine photography. Lonely Planet does a great job of visually exposing the reader to the diversity of Asia's people without descending too often into the sentimental or cliche. One really does get the sense of having a traveler's-eye view of the countries (albeit without the less scenic elements one would certainly encounter in real life). The writing is, on the other hand, ... Read More:

. Year's Best Fantasy 3 (Year's Best Fantasy)
by: Kathryn Cramer
June 24, 2003
Usually I buy an anthology just for one or two stories by my favourite authors. I picked this one up for the Nalo Hopkinson story, 'Shift,' which turned out to be about Ariel & Caliban from The Tempest, but I was pleasantly surprised to find several other stories I liked. Neil Gaiman's story is good, of course, and is a tribute to Ray Bradbury, about a gathering of the seasons. Michael Swanwick has two stories in this Year's Best, and both turn out to be really short; 'Five British Dinosaurs' and 'Cecil Rhodes in Hell' are both funny, but in different ways. 'The Pagodas of Ciboure' I had read in some other anthology a long time ago, and liked. What city dweller knew slugs could be so fearsome? I was a little disappointed in the Ellen Klages story, ...
