. Moon Handbooks Havana
by: Christopher P. Baker
June 16, 2003
I also just got back from Cuba, and I couldn't disagree with Cecil Fox's January 17 review more. Baker is a very good writer who's done extensive research, and the book is pleasurable to read. He makes his love for the place palpable without sparing the reader the frustration a visitor/observer often feels. Other travelers staying where I did ended up borrowing this guidebook for its richness of detail and background that theirs (Lonely Planet) lacked. I liked it so much I'm buying another- I had to leave my copy on the plane as we were without licenses, and afraid of tipping-off US immigration. That said, I wish it were updated a bit. The million bicycles Baker writes about aren't there en masse anymore, and Dulce Maria's was fun but not the ... Read More:

. Moon Handbooks Costa Rica
by: Christopher P. Baker
August 31, 2004
My wife and I love Costa Rica and have a shelf full of books and maps about this great country. We own property there. We visit every chance we get. My wife lived in CR for 7 years (in the 70's) and is fluent in Spanish. That said, we both LOVE this book for both its completeness and its insight.
If you want a super book to guide you to the great spots of CR, then this is it.
The maps aren't good enough for general navigation but this isn't a map book. Just get a copy of the International Travel Maps (ITMP Publishing) and get this book to make your vacation plans.

. Moon Handbooks Cuba
by: Christopher P. Baker
2003-12
This is an excellent thoroughly researched, detailed book as stated in other reviews.
However, in the very lengthy and informative history and pre-reading section, the author's bias against Castro permeates his writing.
Thus he presents a biased viewpoint; he discusses more the inefficiencies of the revolution rather than the advantages.
He does warn us subtly of his bias however.
The best thing would just be to go to cuba and see for yourself.

. Lonely Planet Jamaica
by: Christopher P. Baker
2003-01
"Lonely Planet" is great as a travel guide, but if you want a great read on your trip to Jamaica, take "JAMAICA GIRL" along with you. Jon Michael Miller's novel shows you the real Jamaica, far behind the walls of the famous all-inclusive resorts. You will see the struggles and the joys of a wonderful people, as well as meet Rosalind Juliet Mitchell, a fabulously brave and resourceful progagonist, on her search for love and freedom. It is by far the best book about Jamaica I have ever read. A wonderful story, suspenseful, sexy, funny, disturbing, and quite moving. Wonderful characters. And a great message about the power of love to transform one's existence. A great read for a vacation, or, even, a vacation in itself.

. Lonely Planet Bahamas, Turks and Caicos
by: Christopher P. Baker
2001-04
I am usually a fan of Lonely Planet, but having just returned from Grand Bahama, I would not recommend this guide. Published in 2001, which means it was researched before that, it is quite out of date given the tough post 9/11 economy. Examples: Running Mon Resort- closed. Hydroflora gardens- closed. Rand Nature Center- closed. Many retailers- closed, moved, renamed, etc. Restaurant prices - way out of date. Some of this is just irritating, but some is more dangerous- eg. LP suggests that, to get to Water Cay you drive the 'dirt road' to the 'north dock' and hire a boat from a local. Do it their way, and you may be a lot lonelier than you bargained for: That dirt road takes 45 minutes on a rutted logging road, lots of forks, no signs, and there ... Read More:
