. Shadow of the Silk Road (P.S.)
by: Colin Thubron
July 01, 2008
I am actually only half way through this book. I became interested in travel writings after reading all of Ryszard Kapuscinski's reportage/diaries, also a world traveler who writes with exquisite decorum. I enjoy objective, beautifully written prose which is the flavor I find in Colin Thubron's book. I like his humanity, curiosity, and tolerance of the people he meets. This book will transcend and include you in his travels. It is very educational and will expand your knowledge of peoples of another world.

. The Lost Heart of Asia (P.S.)
by: Colin Thubron
July 01, 2008
Don't loan this book. You'll never get it back. It's that good. It's that informative. It's that true to life. Reading Colin Thubron's "The Lost Heart of Asia" put me in a part of the world I now want to experience for myself, but probably never will. It helped me understand how history and current events interact on such a diverse region. The Soviets left them with one major gift: A common language.

If this gives any indication of enjoying a book :
I read it in two gulps / just could not put it down !
This writer is just captivating .
I ESPECIALLY was charmed by the poignant descriptions of peoples' faces ..
A MUST READ especially , if you are curious to understand the puzzling dichotomy of repression
and, too authentic warmth and hunger for beauty that comprises this fascinating country, Russia..
Spaceba!

. Behind the Wall: A Journey Through China
by: Colin Thubron
1989-08
This book is a record of a long journey the author took through China in the mid-1980s. Before embarking, Thubron took an intensive course in Mandarin back in his native England. This enabled him to converse with the people he met he met on his trip without having to resort to translators or guesswork. Thubron met people from all walks of life--professors, students, doctors, bureaucrats, and peasants. His trip took him from one side of the country to the other.
Thubron enjoys language, and seems to go out of his way to find specific descriptive terms for all he sees. Sometimes he goes a little too far out of his way, like when he describes some Beijing apartment blocks as "tundra-like", leaving the reader wondering what in the world he had in mind, or whether this was just a random ...
