I did a multiple country tour across Europe and I will preface my review with the disclaimer that I only ended up seeing Venice while I was in Italy so all my comment pertain to the Lonely Planet's section on this city.

The section on Venice was not as helpful as other Lonely Planet guides that I have had the pleasure of using with my travels. The maps, while accurate and useful for approximate locating, will need to supplemented with another map (either the Lonely Planet's or one purchased when you get there).

I know it's my personal bug-bear, but as with most guidebooks on Spain the Murcia region isn't given the same treatment as other regions - just 10 pages (that wrongly suggest that all we've got there is beaches and golf courses) to cover the whole region while Valencia gets 50! That said, I like the Lonely Planet guides, they are beautifully produced and the colour photos are always outstanding.

This book and the map was all we needed for our trip to Switzerland. The book has all sources of information - places to see, restaurants, transportation tips, etc. In Geneva and Bern, we followed the walking tours suggested in the book, and we were able to see all major attractions in 2 hrs. For some interesting places to see, the book just provides a brief description, but also gives a website link (when available) for more information, which is very helpful. I would definitely buy another book from Lonely Planet for my future trips.

.Venice & The Veneto (City Guide)

I bought this book because I was traveling to Italy with a tour group, but wanted to get out on my own. I've had good experience with other Lonely Planet travel guides for Libya and Mauritius (not your usual tourist areas). I bought the guide to Italy as whole, then a city guide for Venice so that I would have more detailed information and less weight to carry.

First of all, about 40 pages of the book is wasted because it repeats the standard information provided elsewhere -- the stuff about women travelers, gay and lesbian travelers, etc. And when you are in Venice, a city where *you HAVE to walk* every ounce saved counts!

This book is filled with helpful information about hotels, transportation and sights. I have found that I like Rick Steve's books even better. Both are helpful for travel planning.
