I bought this for a 70 yr old friend who had suddenly taken an enormous interest in Costa Rica, and who was seriously thinking she wanted to go there. So I surprised her with this as a gift. I have to admit that I had an ulterior motive: at her age and level of physical abilities, I believed she would not be able to participate in all the loveliness and would likely find such a trip too much for her to enjoy. But I did not want to deliver that disheartening message.

She read thru the book and thoroughly enjoyed it but realized on her own that other places and trips would be better for her to consider. Sad but true, so the book did it's job. Frommer's can always be counted on to deliver a good product, even if as in this case ... Read More:

This book is everything a travel book should be. Logical reading, with good explanations of what to expect. I especially like the suggested itineraries section. If you want your travel to be easy and fun, this book will get you started. We plan to carry it with us as we travel.

This book is good for general information only. There is not enough detail about any city or country to be useful for planning a vacation. Better to buy a guide book for each country you plan to visit.

This book was great! It took us all through Costa Rica with much comfort and fun. Very thorough: giving you options for towns to visit, resteraunts to eat at, activities to do, so that you may choose based on your general preferences and personality, your level of fitness, the degree to which you value cleanliness, the degree to which you value comfort, etc... I felt like I got a full picture of beautiful Costa Rica from this book and was able to pick and choose what i wanted to do and where i wanted to go based on dependable guidance. Negative point: The descriptions of how horrible the driving conditions were greatly exagerated, as were the descritions of lack-of -safety in the country.

Just came back from Belize. Book is inaccurate in many ways and missing a lot of information. Prices are way different than what the book suggest and I'm not even talking about some restaurants that were recommended in the book ..... bad bad bad !!! Directions are sometimes very poor. If you tell people that one place is worth the find, why don't you give them a little bit more explanation on how to find it ????? After driving in the middle of nowhere for an hour, without a soul to ask for directions, we just gave up. Overall I have the impression that Frommer's caters more for the wealthy, which is the easiest. When you pay a lot, it is easier to get satisfied. While this book touches on a lot of the sights worth seeing, the rest was lacking. The restaurant and hotel prices list were substantially lower than actual costs. The restaurants felt like total tourist traps- overpriced, mediocre to terrible food, and bad service. I was better off looking for restaurants on my own.

.Costa Rica For Dummies (Dummies Travel)

Dummies travel books are usually pretty good and this is no exception. I just can't figure out how people could travel with only one guide book. It usually takes me 3 - I find that between all of them I can fill in most of the blanks. This one and Frommers were the best combination for Costa Rica but a lot of their info was duplicated because this Dummies book has "tips and recommendations from experts at Frommers" so it is like getting a different flavor of the same book. Why can't they just cram it all into one? I also had National Geographic but that was used mostly for the beautiful photos (great natural advertisements for neat places).

I wish there were pictures in this book but it's all text. The one great advantage to this is that ... Read More:

Just returned from 8 days in Havana and have to say that the guide is for people who have 2 or less days. I originally purchased the Moon guide as well but did not want to cary it around. Lots of missing info and way too general. I returned to re-read the Moon guide and have to say it is way more accurate and in depth. The sections in the back about the music is helpful.
