.Long Way Down: An Epic Journey by Motorcycle from Scotland to South Africa by: Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman July 15, 2008 I bought "Long way Down" ages ago with great expectations but I have to say, having finally found time to read it and having gotten myself half-way through, I feel decidedly underwhelmed. I went out and paid a handsome sum for this publication in hardcover after having my appetite aroused by blurbs which promised a great read, and a little humour, in the vein of classic travel writing. But that is not what I got. "Long Way Down" sallies forth into rich landscapes but gives up only a dull stream of prosaic impressions of the worlds and people which it passes. .Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World by: Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman November 01, 2005 A really good trip that gets blown by putting this adventure in the hands of an amateur writer. While this is an overall good story with some great adventure, I found myself at times having to figure out what was going on because of a lack in the writers ability. I don't know if this is a result of poorly kept journals or the inability of the writer to fully take on the opportunity to embellish on this tale and turn it into the truly great adventure that I'm sure that it was.As a result, I feel that at least half the adventure gets lost by what is not written. Furthermore,to sum up the entire North American continent in the course of about 30 pages was an extreme disappointment. Either they chose not to find any adventure ... .Race to Dakar by: Charley Boorman July 28, 2008 I found it to be a good read. A lot of detail about the race and prep of equipment and riders. More motorcycle content than either Long Way Round or Long Way Down. It closely mirrors the DVD's, and had lots of pictures. Needless to say, I would highly recommend both. I've just started reading, "Long Way Down", and within a few pages have become as captivated as before. These adventures are the type of thing I would have loved to do 20 years ago, I can kinda get a feeling of what it must be like through Ewan and Charlie's travels. It closely mirrors the DVD's, and had lots of pictures. Needless to say, I would highly recommend both.
