.Mountain Light: In Search of the Dynamic Landscape, Tenth-Anniversary Edition

Well, even in the tenth revision, it is one of the classics one photographer needs to have in his bookshelf.

It is not "how-to" (albeit it is how-to) but to get the idea of having that image created in your mind and then banned on chip of film.

Galen Rowell writes clear and deep essays about what his heart touches.
It does help if the reader has a broader knowledge about art, painting, and especially "construction techniques" to frame a picture with your camera.

Highly recommended!

This book is excellent reading for "armchair enthusiasts", serious mountaineers, or anyone in between. Before reading this book I did not even know who Anatoli was. Now, I see him as one of the true great mountaineers. I really related to his feelings for the mountains, and I share many of his philosophies regarding climbing. Reaching the summit is not success; to be successful, you must make it safely down. Even if Mallory and Irvine reached the summit of Everest, they didn't achieve success by living to tell about it.

As a mountaineer and author myself, I was very pleased how easy I could relate to Anatoli's feelings and philosophies about the sport of mountaineering. On page 123 he states that he treated the mountains "like cathedrals ... Read More:

This book revealed what Barbara was living, not editing out what was politically correct, not covering up the flying mistakes that would be embarrassing to most, not holding back on insights of strong dominate individuals in her life who can make decisions difficult in and out of the cockpit. In this book, Barbara was true to herself and her readers, in her decision-making, her skills and her growth as a person.

As a pilot I learned from this book, good pilots are always learning, as a woman I learned from this book, trust your instincts and as a person I learned from this book, live your dream.

Well written and difficult to put down.

I loved this book. Great photographs and very inspiring. There are a few pointers on the technical aspect of photography, but the book stays true to its title by focusing on the emotional part (the important part) of creating an image. I gave it only four stars because the last chapter had little meaning to me as a photographer. It basically talks about photography as a large scale way to influence politics to save the environment. Noble, but doesn't really apply to my situation.

This Galen Rowell's book is another one to have in your library. Very interesting and with a lot of great stories about photography and adventure related to photography. It is especially useful to those of you who enjoy photographing off the beaten track, in extreme environments. Galen gives you many ideas to carry your gear and techniques to make that "one in a lifetime" shot. Although the book is excellent I recieved my copy damaged on the back, it looks like the book was not new, it was thorn in the upper right corner. As I am a customer from Spain, it would cost me too much to send the copy back and ask for a new one, so I kept the copy. I wanted to write it down as I don't want other customers to suffer from my unluck.

I purchased a number of these books as "thank you" gifts for various friends we are going to visit in Europe. I was so excited about finding a picture book on California, I didn't read the description thoroughly -- note that the books are only about 7"x7". Even so, their small size makes them perfect to carry in a suitcase. The pictures are quite nice and, even though the coloring is enhanced a bit, they truly show how beautiful California can be. My ONLY complaint with these books is that the price is printed on the back of the dust jacket! This means that if you're giving them as a gift, there's no way to cover up how much you paid (or could have paid) for the book. (I guess I can come up with a cute stick-on label ... )

.In the Throne Room of the Mountain Gods

I thoroughly enjoyed this account of the 1975 American K2 Expedition. The wonderful photos and the well-written text were some of the best I've encountered in mountaineering literature.

I liked how Galen Rowell interspersed his account of the expedition with earlier accounts of K2 attempts, some successful and some not. They gave an interesting insight into the history of this tough mountain and the people who have climbed it. The journal excerpts from various 1975 team members were insightful and intriguing. I am now going to start on "The Last Step" by Rick Ridgeway, about the 1978 American K2 expedition. Apparently, this team wasn't without their problems either.

This book was very interesting. Not only did it have plenty of photos, the text was actually useful and have a great message. Reading Galen's work is just as great as looking at it. I had never even heard of or seen most of the places in the book until I got the book. Now, I'm walking some of the same trails I discovered in the book.
