. The Art of Racing in the Rain
by: Garth Stein

I love fiction like this. Fiction that is this well told, with well developed three dimensional characters, and a story that is thoroughly absorbing.
The story is told in the first person. The novel twist is that the first "person" is a dog named Enzo. Enzo is an astute observer of his master's life, and has a lot of wisdom to impart, if only someone could hear him.
Who knows if dogs really think this deeply, and wax poetic about life's ironies and victories and tragedies? I like to think that they do.
Enzo loves his master, Denny, a race car driver, very much. He thinks that Denny is amazing. His loyalty and love color his observations as he watches Denny navigate some enormous life difficulties and ... Read More:

. The Art of Racing in the Rain CD
by: Garth Stein
May 13, 2008
I have read a number of books on tape and this was the first on CD. It is without question the best and most entertaining book on tape or CD to which I have ever listened. In fact, I have enjoyed it so much that I have now listened to it three times since purchasing it. I have told many people about it, have loaned them my set of CDs, and encouraged others to purchase it (which they have done). As a journalist and public relations practitioner who does a lot of writing, I have a great appreciation for extraordinary writing. This is an exceptional work by Garth Stein and I knew that even before I finished the first CD. He and the narrator do such a wonderful job that you nearly feel like Enzo and Denny are your friends. Was not aware of Garth Stein previously, ... Read More:

. How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets
by: Garth Stein
May 01, 2008
This novel is a brilliant and beautifully written meditation on the ever shifting nature of the truth. It is also an excellent portrayal of how Evan, the "black sheep" of his family, learns to take charge of his own story and stop letting others dictate it for him. Yes, he is a flawed character. He has secrets that he has kept from his family because he was too ashamed to reveal them. He has a 14 year old son he has never met, and he is an extremely talented musician who isn't getting anywhere with his music. And he has epilepsy.
The journey we take with Evan as he learns to grow up and become a father is immensely satisfying. The details, especially regarding the emotional lives of the characters, are beautifully described.

. Raven Stole the Moon
by: Garth Stein
February 01, 1999
A recent lovely weekend spent reading How Evan Broke His Head led me to find a copy of Garth Stein's earlier book, Raven Stole the Moon. This book is more modern in tone than Evan, more an indulgence in pure story-telling and for me, even more of a delight.
The plot is outlined in the Amazon review above-a woman suffering from toxic grief at the loss of her son, abandons her husband and heads north from Seattle to the spot near a fishing village where the boy disappeared in the ocean. The action is resoundingly spiritual, tutelary beings and vengeful kushtaka spirits appear: but the setting and the characters are remarkably textured and real. Anyone who's ever marvelled at the material culture of Tlingit or Kwakiutl Indians will detect the spirit of their culture ... Read More:
