. Vietnam - Culture Smart!: a quick guide to customs and etiquette (Culture Smart!)
by: Geoffrey Murray
September 05, 2006
As the title says, the book is a quick guide to Vietnamese customs and etiquette. It does not go into great depth but covers the subjects overall pretty well. I'd recommend it. Contents include how to avoid culture shock; Vietnamese attitudes and values; historical and political background; religion, customs, and traditions; the Vietnamese at home; leisure, social, and cultural life; dos, don'ts, and taboos; body language; hospitality, food, and drink; giving and receiving gifts; business briefing; and language and communications. That's a lot to cover in 168 pages in a pocket sized book. I'd also recommend "Vietnam Today" by Mark A. Ashwill for a little more depth.

. Inside Hitler's High Command (Modern War Studies)
by: Geoffrey P. Megargee
2002-03
This book is one of the spate of recent works "proving" the guilt of the Germans in general instead of just Hitler and the Nazis, but is far better written than most and actually offers a point for discussion. I recommend a purchase and a close read.
There is little new information (if any) here, but the author's description of the functioning of the General Staff, the OKH and OKW from pages 17 to 101 is particularly easy to understand, and I say this as someone who first read Goerlitz's "History of The German General Staff" at the age of fifteen in 1954. It is this part that makes the book worth the price of admission.
Chapters 10, 11 and 12, offer nothing new except for one-sided cherry-picked references ... Read More:

. Jazz: A History of America's Music
by: Geoffrey C. Ward, Ken Burns, Albert Murray, Dan Morgenstern
November 07, 2000
If you've seen the PBS miniseries "Ken Burns: Jazz" you'll know exactly what you are getting into.
This oversized, photograph-laden text concentrates almost exclusively on two periods of Jazz' history - the 1920s variety and Swing. These were also Jazz' glory days as million-selling popular music and it's impossible to look at the photos in this book without also marvelling at the wonderful cityscapes and beautiful vintage fashions. There was a stylish classiness about the look of the 1930s and 1940s that still towers over almost anything since. Immersing yourself in these photographs and listening to some choice Jazz CDs from the era is the next best thing to a time machine.
This book is also a labor of love for both Louis Armstrong ... Read More:
