Knowing what to expect made me less anxious and more in control of my pregnancy. I particularly appreciated the chapter on how to choose an obstetrician. I gave it four stars because of its extreme advice on caffeine avoidance.

I love this book! It is literally a BIBLE for new parents! It's well worth the money! I would recommend this book 100% of the time.

I agree with other recent reviewers that this book is very outdated, especially as regards their recommendation on weaning at one year. Not only does the AAP say nowadays that breastfeeding should continue for at least the entire first year, but also that it should continue for as long afterwards as is mutually desired by mother and child. Moreover, the World Health Organization recommends that breastfeeding along with complementary foods continue for up to two years OR BEYOND.

It is serious misinformation to state, as the authors do, that breastmilk has no nutritional value beyond the first year. It still contains many important nutrients and conveys important immunological benefits (in other words, it still functions to pass your ... Read More:

the best book I received (and I got about 5 as gifts)... was the "What to Expect" journal. It has a place for EVERY SINGLE bit of DATA you could ever come across while pregnant... some you wouldn't even think of! Pages to interview doctors, birth plan, places for ultrasound & belly photos, etc. It's been the ONE place that I store everything pregnancy related, and it's small enough to carry with me in my purse, so I always have ALL my info ready. Also, if I am lucky enough to have a "next" pregnancy... I think it'll be helpful to remember WHEN everything happened, etc. on a week by week basis.

If you have no clue about basic nutrition, this book is for you. If you are a healthy eater and a pretty well informed person, you don't really have to get this book unless you want confirmation that you're doing all the right things.

This book is good but a little long per page. Being a preschool teacher I look for fewer words per page and bright pictures. It had the pictures, just too many words. It did tell the children what they would be doing in preschool.

Reading this book word for word to my 3 year old daughter would not have worked. We read the big question at the top of each page and answer the question ourselves using the pictures. I slip in different things from the text each time and she loves it. It has made her very excited about a event she had been growling about untill we started reading this book. She has even started "reading" it to her stuffed animals. I would suggest this book to anyone with a child, of any age who is expecting. Read it once yourself and you can decide how best to "read" it with your child.

I picked up "What to Expect" the moment I found out I was expecting. At first, I thought I should read it cover-to-cover, and then realized how big it was. That quickly turned into reading the month-by-month scenarios, which gave me a little something to look forward to as I crossed into each month... until I figured out there was a world of websites out there that did the same thing, and they sent it to my email automatically! This book has very little sense of humor, and really is a worst-case-scenario synopsis. I have been using it lately as more of a guide book for a specific question (i.e. can I eat ____, etc.) but then I still turn around and look up the same question on the web. I don't like that the excerpt for this book only gives one page of text. I really can't tell what this book is about by one page or if it's appropriate for my 5-year-old who bores easily if it's not about him. The "surprise me" page is only an illustration. Rather frustrating. Because of this, I'll look for other books that give more detail.
