. The Rough Guide to Tokyo - 4th Edition
by: Jan Dodd, Simon Richmond
January 21, 2008
This book has very good written content (e.g., clearly written, up-to-date, lively, contains web addresses for further reference), but the neighborhood maps that appear throughout the book are mostly monochrome, and are not very easy to negotiate with the eye. This is a big problem if you're trying to use this book partly to learn the topography of Tokyo. I use this book in conjunction with the well-crafted "Streetwise Tokyo" laminated color map. This would work, but until Rough Guide adds better-designed (and colored) maps, it might be more efficient and cost-effective to look at some of the competing books.

. The Rough Guide to Japan 2 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
by: Jan Dodd, Simon Richmond, Tada Taku, David Waddell
August 02, 2001
When we were planning our trip to Japan, we purchased The Rough Guide to Japan, The Lonely Planet Guide to Tokyo, and The Time Out Guide to Tokyo. If I had depended on the descriptions in The Lonely Planet Guide to decide what would be fun to do or see, I would never have left home. The same items described in The Rough Guide were much more intriguing. Mostly I chose what to see and do based on The Rough Guide. Other items I picked from descriptions in The Time Out Guide. It's strength was the culture of modern Japan, specifically things relating to anime, manga, cosplay, etc. Rough Guide covers some of these things, but not in such depth.
None of these books, however, mentioned the Godzilla statue in Tokyo. Admittedly, the ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet Morocco
by: Bradley Mayhew, Jan Dodd
2003-02
Despite all the bad things that people say about LP, they're still one of the best books out there. They're not totally full of glossy pictures, and not just a bland reem of text. The maps are very useful, and highly detailed, and the recommendations for restaurants help you weed through all the tourist traps. That said, I've often followed their suggestions to restuarants or cafes that don't exist anymore. If LP could find a way to update their books every year, I'd be a bigger fan than I am right now. In this book, for instance, they tell you that the Morora is the only train station in Tanier, when the new Tanger Ville station was just recently opened. It could be a confusing moment if a cabby were to refuse to take you to a station that you don't know is nonexistent. ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Vietnam
by: Jan Dodd, Mark Lewis
November 06, 2000
I'm writing this from Ho Chi Minh City where I've been for the last month or so. I have not traveled much outside the city, so my perspective is limited to the parts about Vietnam in general and HCMC specifically.
My primary issue with the book is that it gives little sense of relativity within the different topics. It speaks about $4 burger joints and $25 formal restaurants sequentially on a page and without going to them you would not know they are so vastly different. Everything is given a cursory overview. I'd prefer to know what places have better food, service, ambiance, relative pricing, etc. Prices are only mentioned on the pages regarding hotels. Once you are here, it feels like the writer just walked down a few streets in HCMC, wrote down names ... Read More:
