. Questions of Taste: The Philosophy of Wine
from: Oxford University Press, USA
October 01, 2007
I wouldn't recommend this book unless you are either philosophically minded (i.e. have a background in philosophy) or enjoy scholarly essays. This book is not an introduction to wine, it is not about families in vineyards, about wine lovers and wine-makers sharing their personal tales about wine and the wine experience (although Chapter 10 does focus on Ridge winemaker, Paul Draper and his opinions about wine and wine culture - if you can pick this book up at the library, just read his interview with wine writer Andrew Jefford. It is the most accessible part of the book, revealing the depth and passion of a widely-read, world traveled California winemaker).
If you took a philosophy class in university and didn't enjoy it, I suggest ... Read More:

. The World Atlas of Wine
by: Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson
September 13, 2001
I was very pleased to have finally discover a book that contained maps of all the premiere growing areas, especially in Europe (in topo no less.) In the past, I had been challenged searching on-line for maps that were able to pin point certain vineyards. A true atlas in every sense of the word to the greatest grape growing areas including a 14 page gazatteer to aid in locating even the smallest village.
The first 50 pages is a well illustrated lesson of wine from vine to stemware including the history of wine, grape type and identification, soils, aging and more. The atlas section contains, in addition to maps, beautiful photos and reproductions of labels pertinent to the area being described. Individual paragraphs guide the reader through these areas ... . Jancis Robinson's Concise Wine Companion
from: Oxford University Press, USA
June 28, 2001
Than the "Big Bruiser," coffee-table version....and much more functional wine education tool because, in my view, while slightly less info-packed, the smaller, more handy format makes it more likely that you'll pick it up more frequently to "graze" the treasure trove of facts contained therein.
Also: the CWC's alphabetical, encyclopedic layout makes it easy to cross-index & reference.
Truly a "must have" for any serious wine afficianado!

. Tasting Pleasure: Confessions of a Wine Lover
by: Jancis Robinson
May 01, 1999
If you want tasting notes and rankings, pick up Robert Parker or Hugh Johnson. This is a book about a life in wine, not a book about wine.
"Tasting Pleasure" is a ramble through Jancis Robinson's ascent into the heavens of the wine world. She's been very lucky, and has supported that luck with intelligence and hard work. In other hands, this story might have been insufferable; but Robinson's greatest gift may be her ability to keep a sense of perspective while progressing from one table laden with fine bottles to the next. She is well aware of the essential frivolity of what she does for a living, and also well aware of her good fortune.
N.B.: Unless you're totally fascinated with Jancis Robinson, there are sections that are easily skippable. The ... Read More:
