. The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court
by: Jeffrey Toobin
September 18, 2007
The subject matter of the book is the impact of the conservative agenda on the Supreme Court. The death of Chief Justice Rehnquist is covered in the Prologue. The Warren Court had transformed the entire legal culture.
By 1991 and the appointment of Clarence Thomas the conservatives had made remarkable progress. Thomas is a philosophical heir to Booker T. Washington. Chief Justice Rehnquist used a line from IOLANTHE regarding his conduct during the Clinton impeachment trial that he did nothing in particular and he did it very well.
Near the end of the Clinton years the conservative judicial revolution was sputtering. The Bush v. Gore opinion amounted to a catalogue of the Court's worst flaws as judges, the author ... Read More:

. The Run of His Life : The People versus O.J. Simpson
by: Jeffrey Toobin
May 02, 1997
Jeff Toobin is an engaging writer who draws you into his narrative and makes you want to turn pages. His book is chatty and "dishes" about all the internecine fighting between lawyers both on the prosecution and defense sides.
As an O.J. trial junkie, I have read many books on the subject, and Toobin's certainly falls into the "he was guilty" school of thought. Toobin doesn't really hide his bias, but that doesn't detract much from his examination of why O.J. was acquitted.
I recommend the book to anyone who has an interest in the "trial of the century", but "The Run Of His Life" probably shouldn't be the only book you read on the subject. For the definitive account of the trial, read "American Tragedy" by Schiller.
As for whether O.J. ... Read More:

. A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President
by: Jeffrey Toobin
October 13, 2000
Nobody comes out of this story looking particularly good -- in case there were any doubts. Jeffrey Toobin has carefully gone over the historical and legal issues and can find no one who lacks culpability. Yes, actually, there was a "vast conspiracy" but it was a conspiracy of lawyers more than politicians. The system has changed. Dissatisfied with political arrangements we now try to shape them to our liking by legal means rather than through the political process. If you don't like someone, you smear him, accuse him, try him, and throw him or her out of office instead of waiting for the next election. With lawyers as eager intermediaries, Toobin shows us a "hate Clinton" crowd on the right and Clinton and his advisors on the other. Clinton himself, ignoring advice, acted in such a ... Read More:

. The Nine
by: Jeffrey Toobin
2007
This book is all about the author and the minor position he held in a historic event and little about the historic event. His bias is unmistakable and the book unremarkable and not well written.
He (or his editor) used the incorrect word for a juror challenge on page 211, line 24 (preemptory instead of peremptory), a 1st year law student knows better. If someone will pay shipping I will send the book before I toss it in the trash but it is not worth the time I spent to read it.
