. No Future For You (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, Volume 2)
by: Brian K. Vaughan, Joss Whedon
June 11, 2008
Whoaaa. So much worse than the first one, what happened? The only story I actually enjoyed was, surprise, Dawn's, of all peoples, and even there we got basically nothing. I said for the first one that it was just "how much skin can they show", but WHOA, did they push it further this time, to the point of disturbingness. I'm sorry, I'm not reading these for that, or for the action, I'm looking so very hard for plot and I can't find any. This is so unreal. Faith is with Giles all of a sudden, and Buffy is not. Willow is horribly un-Willow, Buffy barely has a role, Xander and Dawn are the only ones with a good story but it's not being told. There's nothing interesting happening. I kind of hate this. I want my old Buffy back!

. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, Volume 1: The Long Way Home
by: Joss Whedon, Andy Owens
October 31, 2007
I'm kind of disappointed--the comic version was hard to follow and it seemed like much more of an emphasis was placed on 'ooh, how much skin can we show' than how much character development & plot we can have. There's no development, the plot is very fuzzy and short, and we're just given more questions and no answers. I want to know what happened to Willow and Dawn and Xander and what the gang's been up to, instead of more bloody battles and what the heck, FAIRIES? I mean...there's demons and that kind of supernatural, but I really really didn't see fairies coming into this thing. Still, I have to say it's awesome, cause it's BUFFY, of course, and Joss is an incredibly sweet writer to actually want to continue the series, I just wish it ... Read More:

. Astonishing X-Men Vol. 4: Unstoppable
by: Joss Whedon
July 16, 2008
Alas, Joss has used his tricks one too many times. Plot "surprises" he has used in everything from "BTVS" (TV) to "Serenity" to "Dr. Horrible" (which rocked regardless) appear here. His repeated attempts to invoke pathos are getting as old as the Vaudeville pie-in-the-face bit.
Joss, steal or invent some new twists before you write any more eps of "Dollhouse." And not to be harsh, but go back to TV and leave the crossover comic-book work to, say, Kevin Smith (the "Buffy Season 8" series is already lame, only a fifth or so of the way through the series!).
If you're an X-Men fan who's not a Joss fan, you'll love this book. If you're a Jossaholic who bought this simply because Joss wrote it, it's a case of been there, done that.

. Runaways: Dead End Kids Premiere HC (Runaways (Marvel))
by: Joss Whedon
August 06, 2008
Joss Whedon is my favorite writer of all time. So when I say that I was wary about him taking over this series for an arc, understand that isn't because I was worried about where he'd take the story, because I know he'd do it justice. It was simply because the story came from Brian K. Vaughan's mind, and the mere fact of seeing anyone else carry it on was scary, because BKV did such a fantastic job. "Runaways" has always been one of my favorite comics, and I wanted to make sure it didn't just become one of those Marvel stories that they pass from writer to writer until it loses its feel. So basically, I was worried that my favorite writer wouldn't be a good fit for "Runaways."
THE STORY: Thankfully, I was wrong. The story itself is pretty perfect, in ... Read More:

. Those Left Behind (Serenity)
by: Joss Whedon, Brett Matthews, Will Conrad
February 08, 2006
I've been back into comics in a big way as I fight kicking and screaming my way into middle agedom. I picked this one up in a binge of comics including Alias, Supreme Power, Marvels, Kingdom Come, Batman Arkham Asalyum, and the Ultimates.
Next to Batman Arkham, this is my least favorite. It was too short and too small for the cost. It can be read in under half an hour which is a poor dollar per hour piece of entertainment.
The story is very good, very much a story of Serenity and does well bridging the gap between the shows and the movies. However it is simply too small and limited to be remembered. I liked the story but I am not happy with the purchase. I plan to give my copy to SF friends of mine just to try to squeeze more use out of the $10.

. Astonishing X-Men Vol. 3: Torn
by: Joss Whedon
February 28, 2007
Old-school X-Men action as our heroes go up against the Hellfire Club. Though ultimately fairly accessible, this volume is a little more "inside baseball" than the previous two "Astonishing X-Men" collections. That is, it helps to know a little bit about the Hellfire Club, Emma Frost, and the X-Men's history with same.
Highlights include Emma Frost using truly devious psychology to incapacitate Scott (essentially shaming him into shutting down his powers, with horrible side effects) and Wolverine being converted into a turn-of-the-century effeminate dandy (and it's a hoot to see what finally breaks the spell to bring Logan back). But, yes, in the end I must say that the whole thing is a multi-chapter battle with the Hellfire Club, and though there's a twist or two, ... Read More:

. Astonishing X-Men Vol. 2: Dangerous
by: Joss Whedon, John Cassaday
November 23, 2005
From the beginning, to the end of his run, Whedon treats all the characters, with the exceptions of Cyclops and Colossus, exactly as they were in the 70s. It's as if he wants to write about the heroes he grew up with, and wants to ignore all the character growth that occurred in the last few decades. Wolverine is nothing more than a smartass who drinks beer. Emma Frost is a royal witch, Kitty Pride is still unsure and scared and amatuerish, despite her having been a SHIELD agent, hopped around the world with Wolverine, and kicked butt with the best of'em. Beast is more or less his at first bouncy beastly self, and then switches to his morose, self loathing, insecure self. Colossus is brought back from the dead (guess no x-men can stay dead), and Cyclops is treated like a leader with ability, ... Read More:
