Couldn't put the book down once I started reading it. Loved the characters, loved the building of the Cathedral and I particularly liked how Follet brought the rediscovery of ancient Greek texts such as Euclid into the story. So many things I liked about the book. Sure there was plenty of sex and violence, the story was set in the 12th century after all. Plus I assume we're all adults here so I think we should be able to deal with it. For those who don't like violence and sex in their fiction I would keep clear of this book, that will save me having to read the ridiculous negative reviews.

This was even better than Pillars of the Earth. A gripping tale with well developed characters and plot. It's an interesting look into life in the 14th century.

The main protagonists are Mack McAsh, a coal miner and Lizzie Hallim, a high-born young woman, who has to marry a rich man to save her family. Their love story develops over the course of the novel, as the story progresses. Mack is a young coal miner, a very strong, stubborn, hot-blooded and intelligent guy. He is a property of Sir George Jamisson, who owns the coal mines in the village called Heugh in Scotland. Mack works extremely hard in in the cruel and dangerous coalfields. However, he does not want to accept his fate. He never loses his passion for freedom. I've enjoyed Ken Follett's past books, and being interested in this time period specifically I thought this book would be a natural for me. Not so...
I found most of the characters unsympathetic to just downright pathetic. Feliks was the best of the lot, but I wasn't sure what the author was trying to tell us about him. One moment he's a hardened revolutionary who would would gladly kill a policeman, the next he's torn bewtween his ideals and love--next he's risking everyone he loves in a hare-brained scheme that seemed very overcooked (pun intended)...
The story could have been better. I wanted to like and care about the characters, but I found them wanting, especially Lydia...

Ken Follet wrote this book and came out of the gates as the leader contender in the World War II Thriller category. Eventually, it was made into a pretty good movie with Donald Sutherland. Why did I think it was such a good book?

(1) He established that Hitler is weighing the need for information on the Allies intentions on the Western front. If Hitler can predict - and foil - the Allies invasion so the theory goes, then he can throw his Western divisions against the Communist onslaught in the East.

(2) Intimate Plotting - the plot revolves around the German spy (codename: "Needle" or Die Nadel), a woman and the investigator. By bringing into a real, intimate forum, the character jump off the page . He uses a neat triangulation of destiny ... Read More:

A story of romance,intrigue and espionage takes place over the Atlantic on the Pan American Clipper at the onset of WWII. Follett's mixture of characters are wonderful; everything from aristocrats to theives and spies on this flight. People from all walks of life taking this flight for all different reasons. A darn good yarn and as a bonus I learned something about the Pan American Clipper; an amazing engineering feat in itself.

An Israeli agent is ordered by his government to obtain radioactive materials so Israel could build its own bomb. The bosses don't know where and how to get it. The agent should figure it out by himself. To make matters worse, he should steal the stuff in a way no one would ever suspect Israel has the materials.
Of course, the bad guys and the Americans are also around, to complicate the plot even more.
An extremely intelligent premise, brilliantly carried out by the agent, against all odds.
A digression: I rate this Follett's book second only to Pillars of The Earth or The Eye of the Needle, and side by side with The Man from St. Petersburg.
