. The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives
by: Leonard Mlodinow
May 13, 2008
As a teacher of high school mathematics and statistics, I have read many such books on the subject at hand. Few of them are as readable and enjoyable as The Drunkard's Walk.
What Mlodinow's brings to the table is a great sense of humor and a writing style that is entertaining and engaging, with great stories to go along with the mathematical ideas he shares. He brings in historical anecdotes and psychological research to highlight how mathematical truth and human perception clash. I found myself very impressed by his ability to bring in the perfect study or story to illustrate a point.
Essentially, the book is a course in Statistics 101, but reading it, you'd never know. It is geared to the average intelligent reader, ... Read More:

. A Briefer History of Time
by: Stephen Hawking, Leonard Mlodinow
May 13, 2008
As the almost forgotten Mr. Rumsfeld observed, there are known unknowns and then there are unknown unknowns. Some of us are curious enough to at least wonder about the former. Most of the rest of us lack the time or the dedication or, let's admit it, the intellectual capacity to take the hard journey to the frontiers between what we know or we believe we know today and what's on the other side - and the frontiers are moving farther and farther away from us. It takes a down-to-Earth genius like Stephen Hawking to give us a guided tour to the current limits of human knowledge and back and we can even get a hint of what may be lying across the border. It's a high altitude flight and very little experience is necessary for us to follow our guide but, when it's over, ... Read More:

. Feynman's Rainbow: A Search for Beauty in Physics and in Life
by: Leonard Mlodinow
May 01, 2004
I enjoyed this book immensely and feel that it adds another facet to an overall portrait of Richard Feynman. No one book is ever going to have it all, the physics, the bio, the insight, but this adds a very appealing view from one who was at least on the same floor at CalTech as Feynman himself. As the Zen Master said, it is when something is dying that it is the greatest teacher and in this book Feynman is dying but he's going out the same way as he lived and there is a lot to be learned from him. He gives the author a push toward living in his own skin and finding his own path and does it with the directness that always characterized Feynman. Words to live by? When Feynman tells Leonard that if he's unhappy he should think about that but that when he's happy just let ... Read More:

. Some Time with Feynman (Penguin Press Science)
by: Leonard Mlodinow
April 29, 2004
This small book works on many levels. On the one hand it is the story of a young scientist, Leonard Mlodinow and his effort to understand his place and direction in Physics. In another it is the picture of one of the world's great Physics Departments, Cal Tech at the time Murry Gell-Mann, and Richard Feynmann were there and presenting their own very different ways of working in Physics. According to Mlodinow Gell- Mann was like an ancient Greek focusing on the underlying order of the physical world, while Feynmann like an ancient Babylonian focused on the phenomena themselves.
The major emphasis however in the work is on the lessons the apprentice young aspiring physicist learns from the great mentor and master Feymnann. And the heart of the work is a series of insertions, ... Read More:
