As the title suggests, this book accurately describes the attractions in the San Juan Islands and does so for those traveling by boat or by car. I consider this book critical to planning a trip to the islands and important to have on board the boat when traveling there. Safe harbors, hikes, history, public parks, marine and bird life for all the accessible islands are included. Detailed, hand drawn maps of all areas of interest are in the book. Hundreds of excellent photographs. 255 pages of valuable and interesting information that is well organized and illustrated.

If you have interest in geology, catastrophies, and particularly in the Missoula Floods, this is one of the best books to read.

It provides an overview of the geology and effects of these massive floods of 15,000 years ago, but even more, it provides driving directions, lodging and fuel suggestions, and fantastic day and multi-day trips to view the current day results of the Floods.

I've been to many of the areas covered by the book, and it still pointed out many things I had failed to see and understand.

If you are going to be traveling anywhere in Eastern Washington, the Columbia River Gorge, Northern Idaho, or around Missoula Montana--buy the book. It's a very entertaining read and a wonderful way to ... Read More:

"The San Juan Islands (Afoot and Afloat)" is indespensable to a first-time visitor to the area. From a sailing point of view, it offered much information not to be found without experience, and experiences were found, thanks to the information contained therein. It is an excellent introduction to the islands, and a fine re-orientation after a season or so away. Highly recommended!

I have just purchased an updated copy after using my old one to guide me on a boating trip from Vashon to Olympia and back with a number of detours up the many inlets of South Puget Sound. What I like about this series is that the Muellers have created hand drawn "maps" of most of the harbors, parks, inlets and attractions. They don't have the clutter of charts and aren't meant to be navigational aids, but they give you fast, no nonsense tips to approaches, mooring buoys, guest moorage, facilities, sights and activities. Since the books concentrate on a specific area of the Sound they tend to have more in depth descriptions than some others. this book is best all around book for hikkng in washington. It gives you the big picture at the start of each hiking area, and then details of most trails. Cant wait to buy the 2nd edtion.

This book, more so than any other I have found, really spells out how to access wonderful places in the Hood Canal region like Shine Tidelands, Hood Head and the huge, magnificent Toandos Peninsula. You just won't get this info anywhere else! Simply a must for exploring Poulsbo, Quilcene, Brinnon, Hood Canal Bridge area and much more.

This book is well organized with numerous non-nautical maps and helpful tables. The writing style is concise and easily readible. It is somewhat of an overview publication in that it does not contain the detail frequently provided in a cruising guide nor does it include very much content which is not oriented to the coastlines of the islands. As priced it certainly provides much more in value than one would expect.

If your interest is in using this as a cruising guide, you can expect some frustration by the obvious omissions of helpful information. An example would be the reference to Brentwood Bay where it is noted that there are three marinas which provide guest moorings, but they are neither identified in the content or by name on any maps.
