I purchased this book for a week of solo sightseeing before a friend's wedding. The walking tours looked great on the page, but were difficult to follow in reality and had very little information about each sight (luckily the most famous walking tour in Boston, The Freedom Trail, is marked by a red or brick line throughout the city so no directions are needed). I never found any incorrect information, but it all felt very cursory and left me looking online or calling locations for more detail. My primary problem with the book was the lack of dining information - it listed so few restaurants that it was nearly impossible to find one in my area and my price range at any given time. I was disappointed that there wasn't much said for Connecticut in this book and almost half of the book was on MA. There are other states in New England other than MA!!

I just returned from my first trip from Boston (5 days of sight-seeing), and this book was priceless! It's compact, so I was able to easily carry it everywhere with me. The maps are terrific, and it gives just enough information about each attraction, restaurant, etc. to help you decide if you want to include it on your itinerary. The descriptions of each location are concise and accurate. I found the ratings to be helpful and accurate, too. There are great suggestions no matter what your interest--for shoppers, walkers, families with children, art lovers, history buffs, etc. I looked in my local bookstore at Boston travel guides before I left and decided on this one--it turned out to be a great choice!!

Sure, there are glossier books, more compact books, and niche books for budget and underground traveling in Boston. When you want to get down to basics and do some armchair planning, Boston for Dummies is a great resource. Could you get a lot of this info off the Internet? You bet. Pair this with something sexier like a Lonely Planet Guide, and you are all set, though.

The opening chapters follow a natural chronological progression through the steps of trip planning-picking the time of year for your trip, roughing out a budget, planning accommodations, and getting to Boston. I like how Frommer's doesn't jut stick with the facts, but offers "personal opinions" of what exactly to do, where to go, when looking for something in accordance with your own interests. Along with this guide (which thankfully is very cheap when sold as Used!), I highly recommend visiting Jamaica Plain, Davis Square, and taking the Historical Trail. It was just like going back to high school when learning everything all over again...

I like how Frommer's doesn't jut stick with the facts, but offers "personal opinions" of what exactly to do, where to go, when looking for something in accordance with your own interests. I took my first trip to Boston this summer and this book was very helpful in helping me with restaurants, shopping, sight-seeing and especially transportation. When I went back this past weekend, I brought it with me again. In two trips, I feel like I know the city pretty well. Highly recommend it. It doesn't get a 5 only because I disagree with some of the ratings of restaurants and because I found some places on my own that were not listed in the book. No biggie. I mean, the author couldn't possibly cover every single place in Boston worth seeing.

This guide is all hype and not great hype at that. So it points out that there are bars and places to shop in Boston. Big whoop!!! This is nothing that any half baked hotel bell hop can't tell you nor is it the reason people visit here. This book doesn't tell you anything and you're much better off using one of the better tour guides that give real information on the tourist sites than on using this lame piece of work.
