. Mississippi Off the Beaten Path, 4th: A Guide to Unique Places
by: Marlo Carter Kirkpatrick
June 01, 2003
I have found Mississippi to be a beautiful state with warm people, fun food, rich history and lots to offer. If you have time to read entire chapters of this book before your visit to Mississippi it will certainly provide helpful information. The book provides back stories and insider tips. However, this guide is not well organized or efficient to use. There is no easy summary of must sees - or quick ways to find a particular destination. Also, it can be difficult to find sites highlighted in the book if you are not familiar with local roads - you almost need to plan ahead of time and prepare mapquest maps. While the authors did tip me off to some very worthwhile diversions that augmented my visit (e.g. the Natchez trail is fantastic) and ... Read More:

. Wilder Mississippi
by: Stephen Kirkpatrick, Marlo Carter Kirkpatrick
September 19, 2001
I only recently discovered Stephen Kirkpatrick's work at his Wilder Mississippi exibit at the Natural Science Museum in Jackson, MS. The exibit was breathtaking! Stephen Kirkpatrick has spent hours in the wilderness, swamps, creeks, woods of Mississippi capturing wildlife up close and in a way that I have never been able to experience in all my 36 years in the Mississippi outdoors. This book is bound to become a classic coffee table book for ALL nature enthusiast, not just Mississippians. Breathtaking photography!

. Extreme Exposure
by: Marlo Carter Kirkpatrick
October 22, 2002
I reviewed "Lost in the Amazon," which was released last summer. Now, I find that "Lost in the Amazon" is just a re-titled version of "Extreme Exposure." "Lost in the Amazon" was at best improperly titled since the expedition remains on course for the duration of the trip. It is indeed an adventureless story that the author has attempted to refashion into a life threatening ordeal. In short, the book about Kilpatrick's plodding through the jungle and he's bothered by bugs, the heat and the rain. If that's not bad enough, Kilpatrick is a Christian fundementalist and if I had a choice between enduring his religious diatribes and being bitten by the voracious bugs I'd choose the bugs every time.
