. Tokyo (City Guide)
by: Matthew Firestone
August 01, 2008
I found the previous edition of the Lonely Planet Tokyo city guide handy as an independent traveler. Unfortunately, the new edition appears to be a reformatted version of the 2006 edition, rather than an update.
For example:
pp. 62-63 - The guide bizarrely claims that the Ghibli Museum is located in Ginza, when it is in fact located in a western suburb of Tokyo (the correct information appears on p. 112).
p. 64 - The guide fails to note that the hours for tourists to visit the Tsukiji fish market have been officially restricted since April 2008. Incredibly, the lead author of the guide wrote in his blog about this very issue in April 2008 (http://www.gadling.com/2008/04/05/big-in-japan-tokyos-top-tourist ... Read More:

. Panama (Country Guide)
by: Matthew Firestone
November 01, 2007
I live in Panama and have bought each of the Lonely Planet Panama books as they have come out. This edition seems to have less information than the last one. In my town, Volcán, there are about 10 places to sleep; six were listed in the previous edition, but just one in this book - and the one shown is an odd, out-of-the-way place offering large cabins for extended families.
I wonder if I can trust Lonely Planet to give me the information I've come to trust them for. I will look at other guides more carefully as options to LP for my other travels.

. Southern Africa (Multi Country Guide)

I purchased this book for a month long trip that I took throughout the countries of Namibia and South Africa, and I have to admit that I was a little disappointed when it came to the details. In normal fashion, Lonely Planet does a great job with historic and cultural information pertaining to a certain locality, but once again falls short on the in-depth info that many travelers would be interested in. For instance, national parks and world heritage sites are usually not covered in enough detail, and sometimes they're not mentioned at all. Much of the information is very basic as well, and doesn't really paint a solid picture of the park. Sure, we all know there are animals running around, but what makes it stand out? Notable exceptions would ... Read More:

. The Liberty Bell (American Symbols)
by: Mary Firestone
2002-07
Oh, no! Not another book about the Liberty Bell, and at first glance, a rather juvenile-looking one, at that. But--this is an excellent book! Themed as if taking a tour at Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia, it is appealingly illustrated with broad, earth-tone water-color pictures, giving it the edge for a show-and-tell read -aloud. The text is large, clear and diversely well-defined. The history of the bell is pointed out clearly, simply and concisely; a glossary helps out for those unfamiliar terms. Every reader is sure to learn something they had not known from this fun and interesting book! By the value of this book alone, I would not hesitate to purchase all the books in the American Symbols series for library or classroom.
