.Shelters, Shacks & Shanties: And How to Build Them by: D. C. Beard August 01, 1999 I was looking for ideas on simple structures for the homestead. The book is a bit dated, but you have to go back to find simple, uncomplicated ideas. We have grown so accustomed to specialized fasteners, tools and other hardware. Building a simple shed can be expensive when you have to buy materials. .Giving Up the Gun: Japan's Reversion to the Sword, 1543-1879 by: Noel Perrin January 01, 1995 "Giving Up the Gun" isn't intended to be exhaustive or deeply detailed. It's the story of one civilization's conscious choice to forgo a modern technology in favor of tradition, told in 92 pages plus notes by essayist Noel Perrin. Perrin was not a scholar of Japanese history, but he consulted 700-800 books and articles to learn the story and context of Japan's 200-year reversion to the sword, so the book does seem well-researched as far as it goes. The emphasis is not on Japanese politics or social order, which are explained only so far as they relate to the main theme, or on sword or firearms technologies, but rather on the reasons that a highly civilized culture chose to turn the clock back on military technology, at least for a while. Beard covers the wide array of possibilities for building your own dwelling out of nothing but materials provided by nature. This was originally published in 1914, and I think it's more interesting to observe the changes in culture than anything else. Daniel Beard became fascinated with cabins and such in 1864 when he exhibited a saddleback cabin scaled down to size for him to carry to the fair. He sold it for $7.50, which was a major disappointment to him, as he thought it worth much more. .First Person Rural: Essays of a Sometime Farmer by: Noel Perrin December 31, 1990 In this book, Perrin gives us an honest view of what it's like to be an amateur farmer in Vermont. He is realistic and open enough to share his own foibles. Perrin does not romanticize farming or rural life, even while writing about the richness such living can hold. "First Person Rural" is also full of lots of practical advice for those looking to buy pickup trucks or chainsaws or looking to make maple syrup/maple sugar.
