.It's Time to Call 911: What to Do in an Emergency (It's Time to)

I love this book. I love any book that enables me to teach my child anything about safety. This book allows my daughter to see the keypad and dial the numbers just like on a real phone. It has a very simple "story" and is easy for her to understand. My ONLY complaint is that it's not as real-life as I would like it to be. On a REAL 911 call, the operator generally answers and says "911-What is your emergency" or something to that effect. It seems silly to me that the sound effects in this book say "911-Let's go!!!" and then blares sirens and fire truck horns. I have tried numerous language programs each with different approaches to learning. Each of these have their pros and cons. Speak in a week, if you can dedicate time everyday, does just that. It got me up and conversational quickly. I liked the format and the conversation focus. The first week was easily completed in a week and provided some necessary basics. Each subsequent week was a little more challenging and therefore a little difficult to complete in a week. If you have the necessary time this would also be obtainable. The content of each week is useful and I always felt like I was making good progress and learning useful aspects of the language for use in day to day conversation.

I love the read along books for my pre-reader, but this one doesn't have the chimes telling her to turn the page. She needs help every couple of minutes finding what page the recording is on.

I have been taking private instructions from an excellent Spanish instructor, Nina, who is big on grammar. She had recommended Pimsleur to me and my husband, also her student, and this has greatly helped both of us. I needed more, so was pleased to see Anna Rivera's notice of the ImmersionPlus course...for $15, it seemed a bargain.

Anna had given it only 4 stars, since both the audio and accompanying booklet had many mistakes. Nina listened to it for less than 2 minutes, and encountered 2 errors in the use of the subjunctive. She was appalled, saying she wouldn't give it even 1 star, as there is no excuse to publish something with errors in it.

.Moon In My Room: Board Book (Night Light Book)

I too have had this light quit on me several times. The first time I got a free replacement from the company. This time I think I'm just going to look for another book with a similar feature (perhaps by a different publisher?) My 3 1/2 yr old daughter does love the friendly moon face and gentle story, I just hate when it stops working and she's disappointed! If it was a longer lasting product I'd give it 5 stars, as it really helps keep my daughter feeling safer at night. Re: the review about the story being an ad for the book itself, that's kind of true! And I also thought about the mirror in the mirror type weird experience. But in a way I don't mind that it's selling itself, because in a way I was trying to sell it to my daughter as a sleep aid too.

This is definitely a good learning tool if you are interested in learning Moroccan Arabic. It has helped me a lot for my trip to Morocco. But I bought the Moroccan Phrasebook to go with it and the cd pack already comes with it.

I bought this book and 2 other books similar to it for my 4 yr old daughter. At first I would read it to her along with the CD using my finger as a guide for her to see. Now, she enjoys sitting alone and follow the stories herself. It's true that there is no chime to indicate "Next Page", but if you read along with the CD while your child listens and looks at the pictures, they will learn when to turn the page. I have bought many of these books as birthday gifts for her pre-school friends. These books have been a big hit. Basically you hear a sound effect then a man's voice repeats a word twice in a bored, droning, nasally tone. A voice like HAL from 2001 A Space Odyssey. They make it look so "fun" on the cover, with all the kids. So, where are the kids?

The concept of the sound effects wasn't bad -- but, couldn't they use some children's voices, mix the words into some stories, anything? I don't see how this could be considered "immersion." Immersion implies being surrounded by natural language in a normal context!

If you think your kids might like a list concept like this, I would try it from your library first, to make sure they are not too bored.
