I was somewhat surprised to learn that the adventures of James Bond had appeared in comic strip format in England. I supposed I shouldn't have been...after all James Bond is certainly as revered a character to the English as Superman is to Americans. That's why I really love Titan books! They have undertaken the daunting task of reprinting all of Bond's comic strip adventures into several volumes, each featuring two or three separate Bond stories. Readers will recognize many of the stories that were eventually adapted into film although there are many more which will no doubt be new to many Bond Fans.

This is one of those rare books whose author can rightfully claim Chuck D's legendary put-down: "I've been places you'll never be". The title says it all: IN "Walking to Guantanamo" Richard Fleming tells the story of his extraordinary trip crossing Cuba on foot, and also a bit by bike and other local means of transportation. The reviewer in the Library Journal says it best: "He is brutally honest, even when it shows him in an unflattering light. This is perhaps the most accurate and readable work on Cuba this reviewer has seen." I can only agree.

Peter Fleming (1907-71) was Ian Fleming's (James Bond) older brother. Peter first rose to popularity in his 20's, during the early 30's, with 3 major travel/adventure books about trips through Brazil (33'), China (34') and Central Asia (36'). 'News from Tartary' (1936) is the last of the three and describes a 6 month 3500 mile trip from Peking (Beijing) due west across Chinas western provinces and south to India ("Tartary" is a Western term roughly meaning Central Asia). At the time China's most western province of Sinkiang (sometimes known as "Chinese Turkestan") was embroiled in a complex struggle of colonial and civil wars with Russia, China, etc.. and was a black hole of news. Ian Fleming's brother Peter wrote this charming account of German amphibious invasion plans after Dunkirk, and Britain's plans to repel any invasion they might try. Fleming was peripherally involved in these plans, having been assigned during the dangerous post-Dunkirk period to preparing to wage guerrilla warfare behind enemy lines if the Boche took the beaches and moved inland, but this book is not a personal account but a broad history of the political, military, and psychological factors that went into invasion preparations on both sides, and the final German decision to back off.
