. Palestinian Walks: Forays into a Vanishing Landscape
by: Raja Shehadeh
June 03, 2008
I've walked in Israel and the West Bank before the Intifadas, before the barriers, and subsequently tried to make some sense of the mistakes and the historical horror show that has occurred. I think that the Arabic term "al Naqba", the catastrophe, truly best states what has happened, and what continues for all those who live there.
For everyone who shares the author's love of the land or has any respect for human dignity, this book will make you despair over the tragedy of it all.
Some books on the subject have challenged me, all have upset me, but none have effected me as viscerally as these personal ruminations on the irretrievable loss of the landscape itself.
It's beautifully written. Read it and weep.

. Strangers in the House: Coming of Age in Occupied Palestine
by: Raja Shehadeh
April 29, 2003
This is an excellent look into occupation and the way it affects those under occupation. The Palestinian voice is one seldom heard by the West which is why this work is so very important. To often it seems as if the Israeli/Palestinian narrative is simply scripted for us by those outside of the conflict so that we form conclusions without actually knowing the story from those who are living it.
One of the things I really liked about this book is that it is not a one sided harangue about the horrible Israelis and how bad the occupation is and how the Palestinians are simply victims, but is instead a telling indictment of both sides. The author sees the plethora of missed opportunities that have plagued the Palestinians since ... Read More:

. When the Birds Stopped Singing: Life in Ramallah Under Siege
by: Raja Shehadeh
August 10, 2003
This book should be read by all of the Western world to gain a perspective on the ordinary citizen living in the Occupied territory of Palestine. So often, I don't think we actually realize what "Occupation" means and how much power remains in Israel's hands even when there is not an actual occupation of a specific city. The author helped me understand the Oslo Accord and how it failed to bring justice to the region.
This account ( using a diary format) really brings home what curfew means to daily life and the fear which comes when soldiers invade without regard to human feelings. Although written in 2003, I'm sure this holds true in 2006, and certainly makes me more attentive to news coming out of their continued struggle.

. Palestinian Walks: Notes on a Vanishing Landscape
by: Raja Shehadeh
2007-01
Israel must, at least, stop the daily murders and home demolitions of poor and helpless Palestinian children, women and men. Why!; has the world, especially the USA, ignoring the present and ongoing genocide of the Palestinians!?
I was tuned into this reading Jimmy Carters' "Palestine: Peace: Not Apartheid," and then read "The Israel Lobby," by Mearsheimer and Walt. There is a reason that these two books have been in the top 4 sellers for amazon for over 2! years now: Pure truth courageously written by true heroic scholars and gentlemen humanists.
Also read about Rachel Corrie, a young college student murdered by the Israelis in broad daylight. Remember and read Rachel Corrie[...]
