. No Mercy: A Journey Into the Heart of the Congo
by: Redmond O'Hanlon
June 30, 1998
I cannot fathom all the glowing reviews of No Mercy. First of all, the book crams 450 small-font pages into what should have been a 300-page book. Second, it took O'Hanlon over sixty pages just to begin his journey. My editor would have roasted me for that. Then he moves wrenchingly slow, presenting long conversations word for word, describing every single bird in minute detail, describing his boring, lecherous guides, telling of a poisonous snake (Wow!) that a companion killed. I'm not a beginner in true adventure. Give me Krakauer's Into Thin Air, or Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea, but deliver me from O'Hanlon's drivel. I finally had to stop reading about halfway through.

. Trawler: A Journey Through the North Atlantic
by: Redmond O'Hanlon
January 03, 2006
Redmond O'Hanlon lost me on this one. There are a handful of fine vignettes of daily life and duty aboard the ship in "Trawler: A Journey Through the North Atlantic." But those few succulent morsels are seriously outdone by a ponderous, rambling narrative, dashed off late at night which he never revisits to polish up, which simply, tires you out.
I was disappointed because as an armchair adventurer, this could have been the type of tale I relish. But O'Hanlon's writing here is sloppy and loose, unstructured with lots of tangents that lead to dead-ends. It was too heavy to shake off.
I can't recommend this book as a book of its type. There are many other seafaring adventure tales that "tell the tale well." You might glance through this book and ... Read More:

. Congo Journey
by: Redmond O'Hanlon
June 05, 1997
I really enjoyed this collection of stories that deals with the travails of adventurers in the wild. The stories take place all around the world in some of the most remote, inaccessible, or infrequently traveled places in the on earth. The travelers in the stories deal with everything from elusive inhabitants of the rain forests of South America to extreme temperatures and lack of water. This was an exciting book to read. I'd recommend that anyone going on their own adventure into the wilderness bring it along for the car ride or their trip on the airliner.
