. God's Middle Finger: Into the Lawless Heart of the Sierra Madre
by: Richard Grant
March 04, 2008
At one point in this story of the author's travels in the lawless, dangerous Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico, his hosts take him to a cliff-side mountain viewpoint; they agree with him that it is a spectacular sight, remark on how lucky they are to live in such beautiful country, and then dump their garbage over the edge of the cliff. Later, he encounters villagers venerating a statute of God Himself - but it is so old and battered that only the middle finger is left unbroken. Such contrasts make up the heart of the book.
The author attempts to travel in and to describe the people of the Sierra Madre. His travels are interesting and eventful, his descriptions exact. Having lived for fifty years within a few hour's drive of most ... Read More:

. American Nomads: Travels with Lost Conquistadors, Mountain Men, Cowboys, Indians, Hoboes, Truckers, and Bullriders
by: Richard Grant
January 07, 2005
I absolutely adored this book. It's like a halfway-boutique history that doesn't claim to be one, and as such it can get away with the halfway part. Grant explores the dirty, the grimy, and the repulsive, as well as the beutiful and the mundane. You'll fall in love with this book because Grant's love of the road is palpable, and what he does best in this work is communicate the sense of possibility that is inherent in the road.
One thing that I found disappointing as a historian was his lack of references. I would have loved to have seen detailed footnotes/endnotes for the material that he dug up. He is, however, working with his own experiences as well as the oral histories of others, so for the most part, there is little to reference.
SPOILER ALERT BELOW!

. Doom Patrol: Planet Love - Volume 6 (Doom Patrol)
by: Grant Morrison, Richard Case
January 16, 2008
A must have for fans of Morrison's run on Doom Patrol, this volume collects the final story arc and brings about a conclusion that only Morrison could dream up. As is the case with all of Morrison's Doom Patrol run, the artwork is workman-like and certainly not a selling point, but Morrison's bizarre twists and turns make the exciting conclusion of Doom Patrol a must have for fans of one of comics' greatest writers.
This volume also includes the one-shot comic Doom Force, an X-man parody which has some loose connections to Doom Patrol. Personally I'd rather they kept that story on ice and charged a buck or two less for the book.
If you are a fan of Doom Patrol, you can't go wrong with this title.

. Doom Patrol, Book 5: Magic Bus
by: Grant Morrison
January 31, 2007
If you have been following Grant Morrison's run on the Doom Patrol you have certain expectations. This book is good, but not great and feels transitional. Crawling from the Wreckage, The Painting that Ate Paris, and Down Paradise Way are better books. I will say this is a step up from the last collection, Musclebound, as the Pentagon and Flex Mentallo stories are really kind of overrated.
On to the Magic Bus...
Issues 51 & 52 are dealing with the new Brotherhood of Dada, but the old Brotherhood was better in The Painting that Ate Paris. The whole Mr. Nobody for president story is ok, but I was a little unsatisfied.
Doom Patrol 53 is a tribute to Jack Kirby. Weird issue, I love Jack Kirby but this issue kind of left me wanting a more traditional Doom Patrol story.
