. The Rough Guide to Climate Change, 2nd Edition
by: Robert Henson
February 04, 2008
Robert Henson's "Rough Guide to Climate Change" is a page-turner. The book is a comprehensive overview of global warming, written so it's clear and fascinating for readers not trained in science.
Henson starts with an overview of the catastrophic changes already happening to our only planet. Then he goes into detail on the symptoms of the problem, which include extreme heat, like the unprecedented heat wave that killed 50,000 people in Europe in the summer of 2003. Symptoms also include floods, droughts, melting glaciers, changes in ocean temperatures and currents that change the weather, stronger hurricanes, and more. He doesn't simplify the discussion of causes, attributing everything to human-caused global warming, but presents ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Weather 2 (Rough Guide Reference)
by: Robert Henson

This book was a real disappointment. I very much enjoyed the Rough Guide to Climate Change, and I fully expected this book to be just as well written.
I suppose the book works for some intended audience: those afraid of science and with no patience for trying to figure things out. It presents only a very superficial overview of the why and wherefore of weather, glossing over things like why the jet stream is where it is and flows as it does, or the significance of say a 500mb contour chart, or even something as basic as the relationship between fronts and low pressure centers. We get brief mentions of such things in the context of a very cursory summary of the science behind the weather.
The book does have a strength though. The second half of the ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Weather
by: Robert Henson
July 18, 2002
This is an excellent introduction to the subject of weather. The text gives an overview of the various types of weather, their causes, forecasting and how to interpret it, a survey of weather around the world, and ends with an outstanding appendix of resources for further research (grouped by subject matter). Henson discusses weather in a variety of contexts including the literary, political and historical. The charts on weather around the world are very well designed, but consistency of scale on the precipitation and temperature axes would have made comparisons easier.
