Well, this was by far the worst of the Marvel Essential series that I've read so far. Ms. Marvel is clearly an attempt by Marvel in the 70s to have a strong female hero who is bashed by men but proves her worth as a woman. The supporting cast is ever changing, and it's hard to keep track of who's who, even though Chris Claremont is the writer for nearly the entire series (wait, maybe that's why it's confusing). The artwork is average, and the villains are sub-par. I bought this since I didn't know much about Carol Danvers other than her time as Binary and a bit now with the New Avengers, but this was a tough read.

Sam Keith has a great talent for creating work that is cathartic, translating tragedy into art. In general I love work that is surreal and dreamy and I always feel that with Sam Keith I'm guaranteed to see work that is eye catching. However, I'm used to surrealism sometimes falling into pretension simply because the artist wasn't able to or didn't want to present themes that were universal. Sam Keith is a master at understanding failure and triumph and his work,which typically gets very personal, displays this successfully. Ojo is just another good example from an artist who is consistently great at what he does.

Phenomenal book! I've been quoting and explaining scenes from this book to friends all week. In five pages these characters are given more depth than many new characters have in 5 years. Many twists, different genres of story telling. This is more than just a superhero book, it's a great book, period. Every story (or chapter) has a different artist as well, which gives each character their own feel. Each character could support their own book. Sometimes when many heroes are introduced quickly like this, the stories fall apart soon after (Ultraverse, early Image); but these characters are so well rounded you actually care and can't wait for the next issue.
