. Fault Line (Em Hansen Mysteries)
by: Sarah Andrews
January 20, 2003
Sarah Andrews continues to bring together what I love - geology, and mysteries from a woman's view. I was hooked all the way till the end, but as a warning to others who like to solve mysteries, or who are enjoying the whole series, don't skip the 2 books before this one!
I was lost on Em's perspective and thoughts on certain key issues, which supposedly are explained in such full detail in the 2 previous books that she barely mentions them here. Sure, it's an interesting read (I'd say more about that, but wouldn't want to give anything away), but I would've gotten a whole lot more out of this mystery if I'd had a little bit more background. It probably wouldn't have left a sour taste in my mouth either.

. Bone Hunter (Em Hansen Mysteries)
by: Sarah Andrews
September 15, 2000
What the book really needed was editing -- about 30-40 pages needed to be taken out to tighten up the plotting and remove the long irrelevant discussions that bogged down the book. Maybe others will enjoy these discussions of religion vs. science, creationism vs. evolution, Mormons vs. agnostics, and maybe others will like to learn more about the geology of Utah, but I personally did not find that they held my attention. I found myself wanting the author to get back to the story again. The plot of the mystery was pretty good, underneath the periodic lectures. Em Hansen, the geologist-detective, has been invited -- she thinks -- to speak at a conference of paleontologists being held in Salt Lake City. She will be staying with the paleontologist (George) ... Read More:

. Dead Dry (Em Hansen Mysteries)
by: Sarah Andrews
August 29, 2006
This Em Hanson, Utah geologist and amateur detective, mystery is a bit too much of a lecture on the geography/water issues of Colorado. The geology and water discussions were a bit interesting, but overdone. THis is a mystery, after all, not a book about the geology of Colorado. Still, I found myself yearning for Colorado as I read the book (hadn't been there in years). This book and another Colorado-setting mystery prompted me to go there for a short vacation (I just came back).
The idea that the police would have a forensic geologist and that they would want her to get involved in solving a mystery is just too ridiculous. I also thought there was way too much men-in-Em's-life- talking-about-Em. I think the author is in love with her character and has idealized ... Read More:

. Only Flesh and Bones (Em Hansen Mysteries)
by: Sarah Andrews
August 15, 1999
The thing I found most intriguing about the Sarah Andrews series is the way the author hooks geologic themes within a mystery. For example, Tensleep centers around the drilling of an oil well, Faultline centers around seismology. Flesh and Bones is a wonderful story, and has some of Sarah Andrew's best character development. My only disappointment was the lack of the geologic theme. Flesh and Bones begins with a voyeuristic look into the life of a Mariam Menkin. Mariam was a baby boomer who betrayed both her sex and the sixties to marry a "nice guy." In this work, we find scattered pieces of Mariam's diary and gradually glue together the pieces of how and why she was murdered. The book brings us on a tour of Wyoming and Colorado as Em Hansen digs up clues ... Read More:

. Killer Dust (Em Hansen Mysteries)
by: Sarah Andrews
March 02, 2004
I was glad to read that other people were disappointed in this book for the same reasons I'd list. Just to show how convoluted this book was, I thought the guy collecting the dust samples turned out to have jumped instead of being pushed! The other reviewers are right...too much going on, and not as good as the other books in the series. And honestly, while Ms. Andrews has my sympathy for going through what must have been a horrific experience, that level of self-disclosure is not what I expected when I chose this book. I just wanted an interesting mystery story with some intriguing science.
