This book has been incredibly helpful in planning my trip and travelling around Europe. Unfortunately I had to leave my first copy of this book in London as I exceeded the baggage limit for the tour I was going on. I couldn't live without it though, so I bought a second copy after the tour to help me with the remainder of my trip.
The book is well set out with clear advice on everything from local customs to getting around and to and from cities, plenty of activities (with prices and opening hours for each), detailed city maps and food and accommodation options to suit even the tightest budget.
Everyone who is even considering backpacking around Europe should have a copy of this book!

It's hard to judge a travel guide before the actual travel, but this guide is verbose and useful. There are recommended places to stay and good tips what to see.

I recently spent 4 days in Prague visitng a friend and decided to pick up this book right before I left. I am so glad I did! While I did have my friend with me to help me navigate the sights, I definitely could have done it all easily with this book. It is small and compact so it is easy to carry in a purse or pocket, and it is full of information and color photos, which I think help you understand and get your bearings when looking for something. It also includes a tear out map in the back of the book that has the metro lines on it, which are very useful and my recommendation for getting around the city. The lonely planet was adequate, but not great. It overemphasizes certain sites at the expense of others and conjures a narrow view of the city in question. It is hard to find specific examples, only that I found I used the guide less and less in favor of simply exploring on my own.

This guide gives all the right information, not too much and not too little, as well as good maps. I liked the maps this guide gives better than the "London A to Z" map, at least from a tourist's perspective.

Naturally, because of the number of countries this book covers, it is far less detailed about any one country than Lonely Planet guides covering single countries or a smaller number of countries. Still, for my purposes--a 15-day motorcoach tour including Frankfurt, Berlin, Warsaw, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna, and Prague, with just a day and a half or so in each city--it proved adequate. Few people will have room enough in their carry-on or checked luggage to carry a book for each country visited during such a tour, so one is stuck with a single multi-country guidebook.

I don't understand why Lonely Planet included Switzerland and Slovenia in this book. If one is traveling to Krakow or Prague, one usually doesn't travel to Switzerland during the ... Read More:

This book and the map was all we needed for our trip to Switzerland. The book has all sources of information - places to see, restaurants, transportation tips, etc. In Geneva and Bern, we followed the walking tours suggested in the book, and we were able to see all major attractions in 2 hrs. For some interesting places to see, the book just provides a brief description, but also gives a website link (when available) for more information, which is very helpful. I would definitely buy another book from Lonely Planet for my future trips.
