September 01, 2007
the Lonely Planet guide to India is THE guide. Going to India with the Lonely Planet changed my life. It also tells you to leave the guide behind and follow your intuition. I did. The result was my new book, on how to travel with your intuition and change your life. Travelling Magically: How to Turn Your Journey into a Life-Changing Experience. Quite a few stories about my time in India there - I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

. Cape Town (City Guide)
by: Simon Richmond, Alistair Simmonds

SUMMARY OF MY REVIEW: Save your money and get free guides at the Cape Town tourism office instead!!!
Lonely Planet guides usually rate pretty good in my view, but this guide to Cape Town has made me re-think my devotion to Lonely Planet books. The one positive thing I have to say about this book is that it is small and packs easily, and that is why I think this guide deserves even one star.
The book is a very disorganized rambling description of Cape Town and neighboring communities. The guidebook begins with a historical overview, which is appreciated, but then is divided into sections that defy logical order. One of the first sections in the book, for example, is about wineries. Why is this section near the front of the book? ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Tokyo - 4th Edition
by: Jan Dodd, Simon Richmond
January 21, 2008
This book has very good written content (e.g., clearly written, up-to-date, lively, contains web addresses for further reference), but the neighborhood maps that appear throughout the book are mostly monochrome, and are not very easy to negotiate with the eye. This is a big problem if you're trying to use this book partly to learn the topography of Tokyo. I use this book in conjunction with the well-crafted "Streetwise Tokyo" laminated color map. This would work, but until Rough Guide adds better-designed (and colored) maps, it might be more efficient and cost-effective to look at some of the competing books.

. The Rough Guide to Japan 2 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
by: Jan Dodd, Simon Richmond, Tada Taku, David Waddell
August 02, 2001
When we were planning our trip to Japan, we purchased The Rough Guide to Japan, The Lonely Planet Guide to Tokyo, and The Time Out Guide to Tokyo. If I had depended on the descriptions in The Lonely Planet Guide to decide what would be fun to do or see, I would never have left home. The same items described in The Rough Guide were much more intriguing. Mostly I chose what to see and do based on The Rough Guide. Other items I picked from descriptions in The Time Out Guide. It's strength was the culture of modern Japan, specifically things relating to anime, manga, cosplay, etc. Rough Guide covers some of these things, but not in such depth.
None of these books, however, mentioned the Godzilla statue in Tokyo. Admittedly, the statue is small ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet South Africa, Lesotho & Swaziland (Lonely Planet South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland)
by: Simon Richmond, Alan Murphy, Kim Wildman, Andrew Burke
2001-12
I used the 3rd edition of this guide on my first trip to South Africa in 1999. Back then, this guide would recommend places to stay in the most dangerous streets of Jo'burg, and guarantee the readers that the area was even safe to walk around at night. A taxi driver in Jo'burg told us he was appalled at their reccommendations on where to stay and where to go out, saying they were simply too dangerous, especially for white backpackers. The guide also had an aggressive attitude towards any predominantly white bars or clubs dismissing them as "artificial"... as if the only option was to go out in Shebeens. Racial issues apart, they seem to be reversing this trend, and have been doing constant progress. This edition recommends mostly well-located places ... Read More:
