.National Geographic Traveler: Piedmont & Northwest Italy, with Turin and the Alps (National Geographic Traveler)

This bookguide focuses on Turin, Piedmont, The Aosta Valley and Liguria.

It includes one walking tour of Turin's historic center and three driving tours: The Langhe Region, Lake Maggiore and The Aosta Valley. It also includes articles on interesting facts: Cafe Life, Fiat, Contemporary Art, The Slow-Food Movement, Truffels, The Gardens of Lake Maggiore and Giuseppe Mazzini.

I didn't give it 5 starts because I think it should've featured at least one more walking tour of Turin and maps of other cities (Aosta and Genoa for example). Besides, all the hotels listed are rather expensive, so this isn't a bookguide for those who travel on a budget.

In general, it's quite good, so I highly recommend it.

This is an excellent bookguide of Southern Italy with so many beautiful pictures that just by looking at them, you will want to book a flight and visit it as soon as possible. It features self-guided walking tours (Old Naples) and driving tours (Amalfi Coast, Romanesque Apulia and Sila Mountains), great information and description of landmarks (history and food in Southern Italy) and the following interesting articles: Pizza and Pizzerie, Underground Naples, Vesuvius, Trulli, Cultural Crossroads and the Maffia.

However, even though it features great regional maps (Amalfi Coast and Campanian Islands, Apulia, Calabria & Basilicata and Sicily & Sardinia), the only city maps included are those of Naples and Palermo. Besides, ... Read More:

This is a great planning guide for where to go, what to see, and great itineraries. It is organized by region and is a nice blend of history, culture, and scenery. It provides some great pictures to wet your appetite. If there are choices of some great things to visit in a region, it tells you the best options and may also offer some great out of the way places that are nearby (like a beautiful waterfall that is a short walk from where you are). That said, it does not tell you much info on where to stay, where to eat, and what hours places are open for. That I would use another guide for.

Usually I love Rough Guides, but the Pacific NW one was a disappointment. The authors seemed kind of cynical, like the didn't really like the region, and the recommended places often turned out to be the expensive tourist ridden areas I had hoped to avoid. The maps were poor, making it hard to find the recommended restaurants and stuff. The accommodations selection seemed under researched; we met people staying in more inexpensive and centrally located places that weren't even mentioned in the book. I would recommend using a different book unless they come out with a new an improved version.

Usually I love Rough Guides, but the Pacific NW one was a disappointment. A very good guide to Canada - last year ('97) I drove through middle and western Canada and this was the best of the three books I bought. Generally on-target descriptions and commentary of what's worth seeing and what's worth avoiding. More geared towards low and mid budgets.
