.Moon Handbooks Panama (Moon Handbooks)

I have planned several trips to Panama using this book. The writing is clear, concise, and is generally accurate. I wouldn't say the book has an excess of personality to it (you wouldn't read it for fun), but it covers just about everything you'd want to know for your trip.

My only quibble is that this book needs to be updated. Panama is changing quite rapidly (the prices as well as the physical landscape) and a 3 year book will rapidly lose its value.

All in all, still the best around at what it does.

I just finished reading this book, and want to offer the author my thanks and compliments. I'm planning to move to Panama someday, and his book helped cement my plans. Friar does a lucid and loving job in describing the country, but for me the most important undercurrent in the book is his obvious love and respect for the people who live there. Friar doesn't just tell you about Panama's hotels and restaurants and tours; he introduces you to the people who run them.

Friar does an excellent job of giving the reader an overview of all of the major events that lead to the canal's existence. If you are interested in learning the details of the canal's construction story, then I would recommend David McCullough's epic work, "The Path Between the Seas." But, for an overview, this book is a good resource.

The pictures included in the book are very good and add a good visual complement to the text.

I first read this book about 30 years ago, and its lessons remain as fresh in my mind as when I first read them.

Elizabeth Friar Williams is engaging and irreverent, but more than that, she's dead on target about ways that women can both abdicate and regain their considerable power.

The section on charm is alone worth the price of this book.

I recommend it for anyone, man or woman, who wants to live life to the fullest.
