. Brave New World
City Travel Guides > Books > British
by: Aldous Huxley
October 17, 2006
I purchased Brave New World after reading 1984, and while I must confess that I enjoyed Orwell's book just a little bit more, Huxley's work was still an immediately compelling read. I think what I liked best was just how "british" this future was, by which I mean, everything seemed so very posh and hip and how we Americans would tend to see the British, as opposed to (sorry to keep drawing comparisons) 1984, whose depictions of England were much more how they might be viewed by say, South Africa.
Another thing I liked about the story was that I didn't particularly care for any of the characters that much. I actually enjoyed the disappointment of having each character let me down just when I thought their basic goodness would shine through. ... Read More:

. Naked
City Travel Guides > Books > British
by: David Sedaris
June 01, 1998
Naked is a light-hearted collection of wit and satire, a collection of short lyrical stories from his life. Nearly every reader will enjoy the wit and humor. But thoughtful readers can also appreciate how Sedaris succeeds in easing us closer to difficult material, such as the death of his mother and living with OCD. Naked, however, is not completely naked. The title misleads. Sedaris, in fact, keeps readers at a distance that I ultimately found disappointing.

. The Constant Princess (Boleyn)
City Travel Guides > Books > British
by: Philippa Gregory
August 28, 2006
I have read several of Philippa Gregory's books, and found them to be enjoyable. I could not wait to read this one, as I have always admired Queen Katherine of Aragon, and I found the premise of this novel to be interesting. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The narrative was quite repetitive, and the characters were rather flat and one-dimensional. I kept reading the book with the hope that it would get better, and I really struggled to finish it. If you are looking for a really good Philippa Gregory read, I strongly recommend "The Other Boleyn Girl".

. A Clockwork Orange
City Travel Guides > Books > British
by: Anthony Burgess
1986-11
I say complicated because of the language that's found throughout the novel. The entire book is written in first person, and we focus on Alex, whose language will be really hard for some people to get into. But if you read it the second or third time, then you'll understand what's happening and what the characters are trying to say.
Anthony Burgess's philosophical novel is a must-read. It deals with modern society and government experiments. Basically, the book discusses the idea of driving a criminal away from crime, but "at what cost?" Many scenes involving rape and violence are especially disturbing (I imagine that Stanley Kubrick's film version is just as gruesome). And the government testing scenes are fairly frightening. The last chapter of this book (the 21st) is now ... Read More:

. The Other Boleyn Girl
City Travel Guides > Books > British
by: Philippa Gregory
June 04, 2003
I decided that I simply must read the book before I saw the movie. It has been my experience movie versions are typically vastly inferior to the books themselves. With that in mind, let's move on to the book review.
When the book begins, Gregory introduces us to Mary Boleyn, the younger sister of the much more famous Anne Boleyn, or Queen Anne of England and second wife of Henry VIII. Mary was married at the tender age of twelve to William Carey, yet another courtier. As a member of the powerful Boleyn family, Mary's marriage to William Carey was arranged and in reality was not much of a marriage at all. By the age of fourteen, Mary was King Henry's lover and confidante. We learn that she went on to (supposedly) bear him two children: a boy and a girl.
Mary's favor ... Read More:
