. The Shack
City Travel Guides > Books > Genre Fiction
by: William P. Young
May 01, 2007
"The Shack" is a challenging, thought-provoking book. A man who has experienced a very tragic situation is invited by God to return to the place of the tragedy. Almost against his will, he is drawn back to the scene, where God shows up. The reader is not only drawn into the plot itself, but into expanding his understanding of the three Persons of the Godhead, their love and unity and relationship with each other and with the questioning believer. Wonderful, deep, emotional, and riveting after the first chapter or so.

. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
City Travel Guides > Books > Genre Fiction
by: Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows
July 29, 2008
This novel is comprised of a series of letters from a developing group of friends. The main character is a writer whose editor is an old friend, the brother of another friend, and a quietly jealous observer of the main character's growing attachment for another admirer.
While I admit to some curiosity about some decisions the main character has to make about her tragic past and the consequences of a newly-ended war in the present, I just felt this novel could have been a bit more "evolved" about its approach to religion. The slams are frequent and harsh, and you get the sense there's a strong anti-religious crusade that is always vying for your attention so you can't really pay attention to the story itself. And it ruins all the ... Read More:

. Loving Frank: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Genre Fiction
by: Nancy Horan

I devoured this book. The prose is gorgeous. The story is both controversial and thought provoking. Even by today's standards, it is a story that will have many wagging their tongues. Yet, I came to sympathize and care deeply about the main characters, even if I didn't always agree with the decisions they made. It provoked me to think about women's roles and choices, and how far we've come. After finishing the novel, I felt touched, wiser, and fulfilled having read it. It is now one of my all time favorite books.

. The Road (Oprah's Book Club)

I've been trying to read this book for about six months, and I can never get more than 1/3 of the way through. It's frusterating because I have yet to read a negative review, so I assume it must just be because I am stupid that I don't like the book.
It's the end of the world and a father and son are traveling down a road. That's it? Yes, that's it. Maybe if the father's narrative used proper grammar and actually said things that made sense, it might have had more meaning, but as it is it is just meaningless garbage.
Every other page is a description of them building a fire and burning a tin can of food, and almost every paragraph ends like this: What is it, Papa? I don't know.
Eventually, I decided not to ... Read More:

. The Things They Carried
City Travel Guides > Books > Genre Fiction
by: Tim O'Brien

This review is based on the audio version. First let me say, that I generally do not care for short stories, and I have also managed to avoid most books about war. Once I began listening to this book, I would find myself sitting in my car (after having reached my destination) just to hear a bit more. The reader was fabulous and the stories ...all of them....just had me wanting to hear more.
The Things They Carried is a collection of short stories filled with tension. The stories are based on the Vietnam War experience of the author and his buddies. The reader/listener is drawn into each story involving the men of Alpha Company. You feel a part of the bond they have for each other, and you feel their anger, their isolation, loneliness and their ... Read More:

. Wild Card
City Travel Guides > Books > Genre Fiction
by: Lora Leigh
August 26, 2008
Who'da thought that a writer of erotica would come up with a modern romance about everlasting love?
Did I say I absolutely loved the things I hated in so many of the author's previous novels? The small-town politics. The southern melodrama. The screaming hysterics. Well. I absolutely loved them all in Wild Card.
But most of all I loved that Sabella could commit forever to Nathan and mean it. And vice versa.
I'm not saying the book is perfect. By any means.
Hotness afficienados might say that the hotness takes a while to get going and that it's just slightly repetitive. It would have been nice if Bella had swallowed just once. Or that exactly the same phrases occur in different places in the novel. And really ... Read More:

Silks is wonderfully written with a terrific story and characters. Bravo to Dick Francis and Felix Francis. Thank you for this superb book and for the unabridged audio book as well with Martin Jarvis' fabulous performance! Got so caught up in the story that had to read it straight through over the weekend. Highly recommend!
