I bought this book for a student of mine with Puerto Rican heritage. He loved having Spanish on one side and English on the other. He was not an avid reader, but he loved this book so much that he read it in a week or so.

I bought this book right before a trip to Puerto Rico. Although I wished I'd had more time to read it thoroughly before I left, I took it with us and we referred to it from time to time throughout our vacation. I believe if I had had enough time to read it cover to cover before leaving I would have been able to mark the pages of the things we wanted to do while there.

Some of the information concerning El Yunque was incorrect when we visited, but it wasn't too much a problem. First, when we visited the Caribbean National Forest, our cost was $3.00 per adult and children under 16 were free. We found this map to be unreliable around the West coast in Cabo Rojo. The highway numbers were incorrectly marked and we could not always trust it.
As a side note, don't expect your GPS to work in PR, ours only worked in San Juan, and even there it was not that great.

am kind of disappointed when I paid over 70 dollars to get this book. I should have ordered books written by some European Master chefs from oversea source. Eric Ripert is no doubt one of the best in business. If you have eaten in his restaurant, Le Bernadin, you will completely agree with me. I dined there several times. It is another blockbuster team up (Rhulman and Ripert). Lately, Rhulman's books completely failed my expectation. It become more marketing driven. And this book certainly is one of them. Big book, lots of pictures. But it is just background picture of their vacation or some cherry tomatoes or unneccessary pictures of Ruhlman in cool looking sun glasses or Eric Ripert on the beach. Basics: 2000, 2nd edition, softcover, 129 pages, 300 color photos of 181 species, CD with 1,300 photos of 335 species, audio clips, no range maps

Compared to other bird books on Puerto Rico or the Caribbean, this book is not formatted to be used as a field guide. Instead, it is a photographic overview of the island's 181 resident and visiting birds, but not the other 150 less common vagrants. Each page covers 1-2 species with 1-4 photos and 1-5 paragraphs of text. As one would hope, greater coverage and more photos are given to the Puerto Rican endemics and the Caribbean specialties.

The book is thorough with a good bit of detail (although some reviewers said some was inaccurate) but this is a travel guide and not a political book. He is aparantly against the military, people with conservative leanings, the Coors family and probably the European explorers. I think if he writes another travel book he needs to leave out the little quips and inuendos.

The book is designed to offer a good list of places to scuba relying on the use of dive operators - it lists many. Its use for a couple who just wish to go alone (in a buddy system, of course) is limited, since the locations are not exactly defined. The book also offers a lot of advice as to many facets of diving in these areas. In general, it is an excellent book with the caveat of not giving exact coordinates nor reference points by which to find the specific spots.

This Puerto Rico Lonely planet need an update.

We had some problems with this book because the hotel prices are changed and hotels/Ferries were closed and changed.
