I read this book quickly and mostly enjoyed it...but it's lightweight and won't stand much scrutiny...I enjoyed the vivid picture I got of Salem, but the characters are one-dimensional and have a National Enquirer world view...

I've stuck with Stephanie Plum through think and thin, but this is the end. I'm just glad I took it out of the library rather than paying $28. Other reviewers have said it all, the verve's not there, so I'll stick to the low points: formulaic pablum and at least one misleading bit.

"...and we all piled into Lula's Firebird. Lula drove north on 206, past Rider College, to a neighborhood of modest homes." Well Rider College, actually University since 1994, is in Lawrenceville, NJ, a goodly piece from the Burg, and there are no such neighborhoods. Immediately north of Lawrenceville is Princeton. Apparently J.E.'s forgetting her NJ geography up there in New Hampshire. Shame on St. Martin's press, too, for letting that slip through. ... Read More:

She has supernatural abilities, both a vampire and a shapeshifter romantically interested in her, various supernatural creatures appear in the stories, and vampire bars and nightclubs play major roles in the narratives and even supply names for books. Put that description out to most people and they are apt to say, "Oh yeah, Anita Blake." Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mysteries, starring the telepathic Sookie Stackhouse, do bear a superficial resemblance to Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake books. But the resemblances quickly disintegrate after that. Elizabeth Peters has another winner on her hands!! Vickie is her same, saucy self (yes I know alliteration), John hasn't changed his attitude one bit and Schmidt has a secret that will take you by surprise. I love the fact that there is a mysterious lady trailing after John and she seems to have three names (two pseudonyms and one real). When they finally meet up it is one of the funniest bits in the book. It was also a pleasure to find out that there is an Emerson/Peabody link in these stories too. I do recommend this one.

Sorry to have to be negative. But I have read everything that Faye Kellerman has ever written and she is allowed
to have her off days. This book finishes it for me. I couldn't keep track of all the characters. The family life of Rina and Decker was not flushed out as I used to enjoy (forget the picnic basket contents). It wasn't worth the effort this time and I am beyond disappointed. Seems she is writing to the new generation and I am certainly and happily not one of them. Could not recommend this book. I wonder did she really write it or was it a surrogate???

When I selected this item, it did indicate that it was a hard cover, but I was a little disappointed to receive what looks like a Doubleday hard cover and not a hardcover that would have been sold in stores. Other than that, the book was in excellent condition.

For those of us who write stories and are occasionally published, we are constantly told to never open a fiction piece with either a dream or the weather. The reasoning being, according to agents and writing experts, that such an opening is either clichéd or weak and makes the submission worthy of the instant rejection. That and the stigma of having ignored the current expectations of the publishing coasts and by doing so, showing that the writer is oblivious to doing things correctly. Ironic then, that James Lee Burke opens the latest novel in the Dave Robicheaux series doing both and it works well.
