This novel brings identity theft to a whole new level. A new age killer is on the loose in Manhattan and Lincoln and the gang are drawn into the plot when Rhyme's cousin is deliberately set up for a murder he did not commit. After some sleuthing the detectives learn that several other murders with the same MO have occurred recently. Apparantly, the killer knows everything about both victim and set-up allowing him/her to orchestrate the perfect crime thus distracting authorities from the actual culprit. I cannot say loudly enough how much I enjoy reading James Lee Burke. Every new novel seems to be better than his last, and Swan Peak is no exception. (And I'm not saying this just because I'm from Louisiana.) In this book, I particularly loved:

- his pacing
- his character development
- his use of similes
- his dialogue
- his interweaving storylines

If you've never read Burke, do yourself a favor and give him a try (especially if you're from the South).

Have read all of Ms George's Inspector Lynley novels. Thought the opening of this book was brilliant. We knew it was Tommy and wondered what happened to him. He's back. The parts with him and Barbara Havers were so welcomed as were Insp Hannaford and her family. The rest of the characters in this book were downers. There was no reason to smile about anything else.

Most of the time the prose was confusing and spoken in parables. The conclusion was most disappointing and frustrating. I am not looking for the Book of Life but I do like conclusions that explain motives and actions.

Will donate this book to the library.

As a first-time reader of Richard Price, his rippling dialog was certainly the highlight. His story is a vehicle for talk, not for mystery and plot twists. Some scenes are so crisp and brisk, done almost entirely through dialog.

We know who committed the crime early, and the incident isn't much of one on which to hang a story. Instead, we go behind the scenes for police process and for character development of the main detective, the parents of the victim, and assorted others. From a safe perch in suburbia, contemplation of street life in turbulent city neighborhoods can be quite entertaining in the hands of a guy like Mr. Price.

This book follows the 4 girls in the Women's Murder Club Series. This particular book was up and down with twists and turns. Sadly the girls lost one of their own; although they suffered a loss, the book follows through with what would "she" do (I'm not giving away which character :0)). There will always be 4 Margarita glasses at their table. I wasn't enamored by the ending; it wasn't a typical Patterson ending. Nonetheless, this book follows perfectly. "I am off to the 4th of July..."

I've been reading J. A. Jance's Joanna Brady mysteries since the first one, Desert Heat, was published back in 1993. The earlier books were all great reads, but frankly, I'd become a little bored with the series due to the mostly predictable behavior of its principal characters until I read the latest book, Damage Control. This book has a lot going on, holds your interest, and most importantly to me, it feels real for a change. In fact, several scenes brought tears to my eyes, which is unusual for me. Not a great book, but a very good one indeed.

Just outside Reykjavik, Iceland, the draining of Lake Kleifarvatn uncovers a skeleton tied to a Cold War Russian radio device. Police inspector Erlendur and his subordinates Elinborg and Oli investigate what is obviously a homicide. With a hole in the skull and the technology employed is found that the murdered corpse was dumped in the early 1970s so they seek missing persons' cases from that era never solved.

The case haunts Erlendur as does any missing person inquiry because it reminds him of his younger brother who vanished when they were children. As they dig to identify the victim and from there hope to determine who the murderer is , the cops have hope for the former but none for the latter. The culprit could be dead, in Russia, or elsewhere.
