If you're really going to rent a car in Italy, well, are you REALLY sure you want to rent a car in ITALY?!? Have you heard of the way Italians drive?! Ok, fine, I won't insist in trying to discourage you from having a white-knuckle, hold-on-to-your-seat, head-scratching, stressful vacation, but the least you can do is be equipped with this road Atlas. The suggestions on places to see according to each map are very good.
Oh, and DO NOT FORGET to request a GPS for your car!!! If the rental company say they don't have it, insist upon getting one.

This is an excellent and highly detailed driving map. My only negative comment is that it is so detailed, a magnifying glass may be needed to read certain roadway areas.

This atlas is a great value at $16.32, but it suffers from very bad design. Here are the design failures I've experienced:

* This is actually five separate atlases jammed together into one book. Each of the five has its own scale, its own index, and--unfathomably--it's own LEGEND. The legend for Germany is different from the legend for Belgium. There are more than SIXTEEN PAGES of legends--eleven at the front, five scattered through the indexes, plus "special symbols" identified on pages XXII and XXIII.

* The only broad-scale map showing all of the atlas's area doesn't show a single road. There is no all-encompassing map connecting the roads across the five independent maps. If you're driving from one country to ... Read More:

Ever lived in LA? The Thomas Guides are great because they block each section of the city into about 1 square mile grids and you can easily see approaches and streets. This Michelin guide does that for all of North America. Instead of Vermont being on one page the sections are all about 50 square miles. The back section is fairly good street guides of metropolitan areas on maybe a 5 square mile page. Even a town the size of Fort Wayne, IN gets one of these maps. Really helpful to get from point a to point b where you have directions to the final destination in a city.

The only thing that keeps me from giving this five stars is the availability of completely up-to-date route planners on the internet. For research, however, it's great - lots of detail and helpful facts. I use it to plan a trip and then print out route maps for specific legs of the trip from Michelin's website - it's become increasingly difficult to get lost (something I used to do with great regularity).

I bought an earlier edition of this altas for brothers, and nephews as a Christmas gift a few years back. They all love it because of the convenient size and the geographic organization. So, I bought one for myself and I am ready to hit the road, or simply sit back and dream about a road trip!
